Discover one of Guatemala's hidden cultural treasures on this unique 5-hour shore excursion from Puerto Quetzal. Travel to the welcoming community of La Democracia, home to the famous Preclassic Colossal Stone Heads, some of the most remarkable ancient sculptures in Mesoamerica. Guided by local students from the Guardians of Time program, you'll explore the archaeological park while learning about the history, symbolism, and significance of these extraordinary monuments. Continue to the town's historic church and vibrant local market, where you'll experience authentic Guatemalan traditions, colorful produce, handmade crafts, and everyday community life. The journey concludes with a visit to the local school, where students proudly present interactive heritage exhibits and share how tourism supports education and cultural preservation. Every visit directly contributes to scholarships, educational materials, and community development, making this much more than a sightseeing tour.

A listless, uninformative and uninformed guide who was surprised that the museum was closed and thus showed us 12 stones, without any historical information about it. This excursion is not recommended!!!

Our guide Nelson was low key, knowledgeable and very pleasant. Ride had some nice features like sugar cane fields, volcanoes, banana plantations but was 1 hour and 45 minutes, not 1 hour as stated in description. The Mayan sculptures are impressive and the small museum was informative. The small town was genuine and gave a sense of how people live here. A stop for lunch at a beach restaurant proved to take way too long so we recommend against it.

Santiago was our driver/guide, and he was AMAZING!!! He gave us great history and background, showed us all around, and did an excellent job of skipping traffic and getting us back to the ship with plenty of time to shop at the port. Would definitely recommend, as we saw so much more of the countryside and how both locals and Mayans currently live. Thank you Santiago!
