Berkeley Memorial
The Berkeley Memorial was erected in 1883 in memory of Thomas Berkeley a legislator and owner of plantations in St. Kitts. After the fire of Basseterre on 4th July 1867, which destroyed East of West Square Street, it was discovered the fire vehicle had difficulty maneuvering through the streets. However, in 1883 it was decided to widen Fort Street and place the monument in the center which we now call The Circus. A small replica of "Big Ben at Picadilli Square in London". The monument has clocks and water fountains and became and still is a social venue for taxi drivers and everyone else especially during festive occasions. Just a short distance is the Independence Square renamed from the former Pall Mall Square a former slave market. Here slaves were stored in the surrounding buildings in the dungeons and placed on display for sale. Most of the buildings surrounding the Square still have the same style of architecture. Today the square is a relaxing venue for everyone.
