Jackson Square
Meet in the Jackson Square neighborhood – a 10-minute walk from Downtown San Francisco – in the late afternoon to start your walking tour. Come hungry, as you’ll be getting lots of food on this 3-hour tour, which follows a flat, easy route. Following your expert local guide, delve behind the scenes of Little Italy’s food and restaurant scene, hearing fascinating historical facts and stories along the way, like how this neighborhood was once part of the Barbary Coast – San Francisco’s red-light district in the 1800s during the California Gold Rush. You'll also visit hidden Prohibition-era tunnels where booze was smuggled into the city.
North Beach
Though you’ll learn a lot of interesting history, this tour is about the food. Enjoy a cheese tasting at a trendy wine bar. Then indulge in an Italian wood-fired pizza made in the oldest pizza oven on the West Coast; built in 1935, this treasured tool was copied by Wolfgang Puck at Spago and Alice Waters at Chez Panisse. Pop into a gourmet boutique shop for a sweet-and-savory treat such as artisan agave caramel drizzled over popcorn- yum! Top your culinary journey off with a visit to a historic Italian bookshop-turned-café, where you'll fill your own delicate cannoli with an Italian cannoli maker.

I absolutely loved this walking food tour through North Beach! From the moment we met Nikki, our incredible guide, it felt like we were reconnecting with an old friend. Her warmth, humor, and deep knowledge of the neighborhood made the experience unforgettable. Every stop was thoughtfully chosen — from hidden gems to iconic bites — and the food was phenomenal. What really set this tour apart was the vibe: casual, fun, and full of great conversation. Nikki effortlessly brought our group together, and by the end, it felt like we were all longtime friends sharing stories over delicious plates. I especially appreciated the personal touches — from dog talk to travel tips to local restaurant recommendations (can’t wait to try Italico and explore The Mission next!). This isn’t just a food tour — it’s a celebration of community, culture, and connection. If you're looking for something special in San Francisco, this is it. I’ll be recommending it to everyone I know and can’t wait to join another tour soon. Thank you, Nikki and the Avital team, for such a memorable experience!

The North Beach food tour was amazing! Our guide Nikki was so fun and knowledgeable about the neighborhood and cuisine. The pesto pasta (non-seafood option) at Sotta Mare was the best I've ever had. Hearing stories of each restaurant truly made me feel more connected to the food we were enjoying. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting San Francisco or any locals who just want something fun to do.

Nicole was the best, most passionate and engaging food tour guide ever! Loved the restaurant and food selections too. And the “embrace the quirky” great historical fun facts were awesome. Thank you for a wonderful time! We plan to take more Avital tours, for sure.

Evan was our guide. He was professional and added just enough history to make more than a food tour. Only thing my husband and I would suggest (everytjing served was very good by the way) is to add a second option instead of just serving one item. We would never have ordered the items served and enjoyed each spot!

We highly recommend the progressive dinner walking tour of North Beach with Avital. Nikki kept a reasonable pace as she led a small group of us from Washington Square through the Italian community, where we sampled Cioppino with crab and shellfish, a delicious pork Bao bun, hot fresh pizza from the oldest pizza oven on the West Coast, and finally two flavors of creamy, luscious gelato! Her inside stories of the families and history behind each restaurant made the tour memorable. All the food was fresh, hot, and scrumptious! This was much more fun than randomly choosing a restaurant and sitting the whole time! We were so full! The tour starts at 3:00 pm and ends about 6:00, and alcohol can be added to the package (optional). No need for dinner after this! Take a Lyft or Uber to a show, or head to a comedy club or opera after the tour! Dress casually and warmly, depending on weather.

I loved this experience! Wow! The food, stories, and fellow travelers were just wonderful. The ciopinno soup was by far my favorite. The four other guests were just lovely and the walk was more like a stroll, nice and easy. Danielle was our docent and she just rocked. She took care of us which I really enjoyed. I liked not having any responsibility navigating a busy city. Our first progressive dinner and totally not our last! A great value and worth every penny.
