If you are visiting the Isle of Mull, are fit enough to walk a few miles over rough terrain and are interested to see/hear at first hand what it's like to be a hill farmer here in the Scottish Hebrides (and to learn about the local culture, traditions and heritage), our Hebridean Farm Hikes are for you! You'll encounter a host farmer passionate about the countryside, a herd of (slightly wild!) Highland ponies and a flock of (very friendly) Shetland sheep. Depending on the weather, the hiking experience in this wild landscape can range from challenging (i.e. wet and muddy...) to mysterious (i.e. misty...) to stunning (when the sun is shining!). The sights change with the seasons: in the spring and summer, there are wild flowers galore; in the autumn, the bracken turns golden and dies back, making it easier to walk; and in the winter, you'll understand the challenges of farming in this part of the world! We look forward to welcoming you to our unique wee corner of planet Earth soon...

Tobermory
We're on a hill farm, so unsurprisingly, there aren't any listed 'tourist' sites on our guided walks (hence why I had to select Tobermory as the attraction). The walk starts at the entrance to The Fauld Farm just outside Tobermory then we head up on to Meadow Ridge (so called because it's covered in a carpet of wild flowers in spring and summer). On clear days, from this ridge you can see for miles across the sea to the mainland and out towards the distant Iself of Rum. We'll pass Highland ponies and Shetland sheep and (depending on the time of year) we may also see the occasional hare plus encounter wild birds such as ravens, rock doves, hoodies and curlews. Time permitting (everyone walks at different speeds!), we may also venture on to the second ridge of the farm, which looks out over Bloody Bay, scene of a historic sea battle in the 15th century. In the distance, provided it's not too misty, you can also see Rubha Nan Gall Lighthouse). You need strong boots for the walk!
We'll include a wee taster of a local biscuit or other treat during the hike.
For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.

I enjoyed a fabulous couple of hours, hosted by Karen on The Fauld. We yomped over fields, crossed a stream, took in the views & met the animals! Karen is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic & has amazing drive & determination to keep the farm going through trials & tribulations. This is hard work & there’s no other way to appreciate that than to listen & learn. The farm also has an amazing array of wildflowers which Karen recognises & points out. Ask her anything - if she doesn’t know the answer, she will find out. Finally, Karen went the extra mile for me because she is so keen for the visitors to Mull have the best experience. Thank you Karen ☺️

We had a wonderful visit with Karen at Faud Farm for our Hebridean Farm Hike on Mull. The hike included an entertaining and informative tour of the farm’s fields and hills across a rolling green landscape with marvelous views of the Sound of Mull. During the hike Karen introduced us to the animals of the farm, many of them by name. Highlights included our visit with the farm’s group of Shetland ponies, now with foals, and the many lambs rambling along close to their mothers. Luckily the Blue Bonnets were yet in bloom around us so we took in that gorgeous view while learning from Karen about many of the beautiful wildflowers growing in the fields and hillsides. Of note is Karen’s many enjoyable and sometimes dramatic stories of farm life on Mull often involving the many creatures we saw on the tour. These stories educated us on the determination it takes to manage a farm in the harsh Mull environment. Overall, we enjoyed the exercise, the animals brought delight, and we were both greatly informed and entertained during the hike. Also, Karen is an easy communicator and an accommodating host. Her enthusiasm for the farm, the animals, and our enjoyment of them showed no bounds. We had a great time and the hike will be one of our fondest memories of our visit to Mull! When you go, this tour will not disappoint. Say “hi” to Pickle for us when you arrive!

What a wonderful time we had! Karen was so welcoming, informative and passionate about her farm and we went at a perfect time of year. We were lucky enough to see a lamb literally a few minutes old and were introduced to her Highland ponies. It was a definite highlight of our trip to Mull. Thank you, Karen!

Best tour of my trip. Such a magical, beautiful place with great animals and great visibility and such a warm guide! Would recommend it 100 percent to everyone who comes to Mull. It's really so worth it. I would even say in my top 3 holiday experiences now ranked No. The photos cannot reproduce the whole thing properly at all.

Karen was a great host - showing us her wonderful farm. Very knowledgeable about plants, islands, animals and farming in the wilds of Mull. The weather was poor but she still managed to make the visit very informative and enjoyable. The Highlands ponies, tame Shetland sheep and views were great. Highly recommend for something different.

Absolutely stunning views - with relatively modest effort - over Tobermory, along the sound of Mull and over to the mainland at Morven and Ardnamurchan. Karen provided fascinating insights into the ecology, plants, wildlife and livestock on this little gem of a farm. I would highly recommend.

My two adult children and I hiked about the Fauld Mull with owner Karen and loved every minute of it. The weather was not the greatest throughout (hey, it’s Scotland…) so we had Karen, the sheep and ponies to ourselves and are so happy we went. Dress appropriately and you’ll be happy too, rain or shine. Can’t wait to return someday. ❤️🙂

Great day on The Fauld with Karen today! Thank you for the tour of your wee farm and allowing us to hike your land with you as guide. It was so beautiful and I learned a lot. Thanks also to you for doing your best to preserve the farm and its surrounds, it is a treasure! Many blessings to you and yours!

My partner and I spent a little over a week in Scotland, and touring The Fauld Farm with Karen was definitely the highlight of our trip! Even with a little rain, our hike was a fun and magical experience. Walking through wildflowers, up and down hills along the water with sheep and horses around us was a true dream (and we even got a rainbow during our time on the farm!). Karen is such a kind and engaging guide; her stories about the farm, the wildlife, and Mull in general were a treat to hear. She and her husband clearly put their heart and soul into the farm, and that is reflected in the hike. We ended with a delicious snack and were given some great pointers on what to do with our remaining time on Mull (including where to find the best deal on shortbread!). If you are planning a trip to Scotland, please please please do yourself a favor, and schedule a hike at The Fauld Farm!!
