What To Expect

The view inside the Ice Cave is truly spectacular the combination of the colors of the ice, you will get the chance to see some amazing black ice as well as some blue ice features. The Katla Ice Cave is truly unique. The ice cave is located in Kötlujökull Glacier which is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. Underneath the glacier waits the mighty volcano Katla where the both the glacier and the ice cave takes their name from. The tour departs from the village of Vík where you will hop on a Super Jeep that takes you up to the ice cave. There you will put on crampons and a helmet to prepare you to walk inside the natural ice cave. Your expert guide will inform you all about the glacier and how the ice cave is formed by mother nature. - Driving time to Vík from Reykjavík is around 2 hours and 30 minutes in good road conditions. Please note that if you arrive after departure time, your place on the tour can't be guaranteed or refunded.

I’ll start by saying that our two group guides were beyond amazing, warm, knowledgeable and professional. Tomas and Jacob were awesome. Other travelers should know what is not in the trip description or videos. The drive to the katla caves was approx 45 min and 30 min was off road on exyremely bumpy terrain. A few of us had motion sickness and only felt better later that morning. We asked the guides to open windows, and that was slightly helpful. Nowhere in the trip description did it explain this part of the journey to the Katla caves. It was an excellent excursion because of our two fantastic guides and beautiful connection with nature. Please add info about the off-road experience to the description.

Exploring the ice caves on the glacier on an active volcano was a once in a lifetime experience! Hawk, our tour guide, was great! He was very knowledgeable about volcanoes and ice caves and took the time to answer questions so everyone left with a better understanding of both. Fantastic tour!

Never ever book with Viator. They charge exuberantly higher price than the actual price of the tour. Book directly with the operator as on their website it is priced at $151/person with a 20% discount if you book by June15th. I didn’t know about that Viator charged me for the same tour so high, $ 283/person, total of 566 for 2. Also, on the Viator the same tour is listed as with other operator as $197/person and my friends booked with that. However, all of us are travelled with the same company (trolls.is) , on the same jeep and guide. So, someone like me paying 566 for party of two, the others are paying 394 for 2, while directly from the company you’re paying 240 for 2’persons with discount. Even without discount would be 302 for two persons. And when you call Viator they’re not listening to price match even with their website price. Tour as such is a great experience and the company is extremely knowledgeable and helpful but you feel cheated booking through Viator. So booking experience is horrible.

Our guide Tama was very knowledgable and friendly. She was also really proactive in offering to take photos and so we got some really nice, cool ones of ourselves. The tour itself is more walking to the ice tunnel than being in it but it was really interesting to walk on a glacier that was black

The Viator team and Troll Expeditions customer service were absolutely outstanding in accommodating our last-minute tour date change after we got a flat tire on the way. They made a stressful situation so much easier and truly went above and beyond for us. The cave tour was even better than we expected! The Super Jeep ride was incredibly fun, and the scenery along the way was absolutely breathtaking. The cave itself was much bigger than we imagined, and being able to climb the glacier/volcano was truly the highlight of our trip to Iceland. Our tour guide, Net, was absolutely incredible — patient, knowledgeable, and so passionate about the experience. He gave us plenty of time to ask questions and took tons of amazing pictures for us throughout the tour.

We wanted to do a Katla Ice cave tour when we returned to Vik but were unsure who to go with. We did a lot of research and were unsure who to go with. Troll.Is had a few mixed reviews but people who we talked with said they were OK to go with so we decided to go with them. The meeting place was near were we stayed and easy to get to regardless as Vik is pretty small. When we got there, the staff were amazingly helpful. They were loated in the lobby of the Vik Inn hotel. Plenty of parking is available. They had hot drinks and pastries and cakes available while waiting. Check in was easy, the guides had everything on their phones. We had two small groups and these were merged into a larger one, still only ten people so it was good. We had two guides who were amazing. These guys really made the tour as they were, knowledgeable, funny, caring and very friendly. The guides were HAWK and BEDA. The drive out was fun, going though the frozen and slushy ice, going through the big pools and getting the 4wd experience. I didn't feel car sick at all with all the rocking and movement. Once we arrived at the cave, we had the safety talk, got kitted up into the Crampons, and then waked up the slight rise to the ice cave on the glacier. You don't need a lot of fitness to do this. The cave was amazing, the camera doesn't do the colours justice and the depth of looking into the ice was amazing. You just need to watch were and how you walk though as one lady in our group didn't and stepped knee deep into freezing ice melt and got here boot filled with ice water. Not a fun experience for her. We walked through the cave twice, once each way. It was one of the best things we did in Iceland. Hawk took one of the best photos of myself and my wife together while we were on holidays and I was so thankful of this. Troll.Is were excellent and I can't thank our guides, Hawk and Beda enough for the great tour they provided. The tour was value for money. The equipment was appropriate and good for the tour. Safety was always paramount from the guides. Troll.Is Katla Ice tour is well worth doing.
