Paravur Backwaters is one of the lesser known, tightly kept secret locations in southern Kerala. The Paravur Backwaters is safe and a sheltered waterbody, without much influence of the tidal effects. You can be assured of the safety as the depth of the lake in general is not more than 10 feet and not wider than 1 km. This ensures you don't paddle out and lose orientation in unknown waters.
You will find it truly unique place to paddle to the Black Devil Snail Sandbar as it is a dynamic sandflat that constantly changes its shape and size due to wind, tide, current and water levels.

1) After reporting at Syzygy, please proceed to select suitable size life jackets. 2) Our Trip Guide will provide Basic Kayaking Instructions before trip starts. Our Guide will come along in another kayak for your safety during the entire trip. 3) Within 20 to 30 minutes of paddling from the launch point, you will reach the Black Devil Snail Sandbar Island. It is a sand flat which constantly changes its shape and size due to wind, tide and current conditions. 4) Black Devil Snail Sandbar area is an ideal intertidal place for taking rest or for swimming or watching sunsets. Avoid going near the Spillway Regulator (that drains water from lake to sea) for safety reasons. 5) Paddle from here for 20 to 30 minutes to reach back Syzygy and end the trip. 6) Take shower or change clothes before you go back to your hotel or home. The whole trip was a fantastic experience. We went to the sand bar trip with heavy expectations and we were satisfied with the experience that they gave us. The trip lasts for an hour or so and that depends on the travellers mindset and willingness to explore. We reached the spot at 6.45 AM and were accompanied by a guide named Samson. He was really well mannered and helped us in completing the trip. The view from the island especially during the dawn is an unforgettable one. On one side there is the beach, on another side there is the Ashtamudi lake and far away you can see the railway bridge. The sight of the train moving across the bridge is something to be experienced. You can literally walk through the lake when the water level is down. After completing the trip we expressed our satisfaction to the officials there. This is something to be done when visiting Varkala

Syzygy is by far the best place to enjoy kayaking and canoeing in the pristine backwaters in the Ashtamudi - Paravur area. I did a multi-day kayak expedition covering Ashtamudi, Paravur lake and nearby places. The location is absolutely stunning with swaying palms, small islands and sandbars, and mangroves. I suggest you dedicate at least 3 hours to visit the small island with a temple and the mangroves and also do a tour of Ashtamudi. They have kayaks of different types - all of superior quality and canoes too for group paddling. The charges are reasonable and you'll find them professional and caring. Be ready to adhere to basic rules like using a life-jacket and not polluting the surroundings. If you are anywhere near Ashtamudi, Varkala, Kovalam, Kollam or Paravur this kayak tour is a must. I am definitely going again and next time would stay in their tents.
