Get away from the hustle and bustle of the Sassi di Matera and discover a true Italian farm. Silvia, Greg and Agriturismo L'Assiolo invite you to your own personal cooking class set at a beautiful local organic olive and orange farm just outside of Matera in the Italian countryside. First up, a quick tour of the farm so that you can really understand where the food we use in this part of the world comes from. Learn all about our 'liquid gold', extra virgin olive oil, and how we produce it with our very own trees. What’s more, you’ll get the chance to eat some fruit straight from a tree - just like a real Italian farmer! Then, it’ll be straight into the kitchen where you’ll meet Silvia, the daughter of the family, who has had over 20 years of seeing her Mamma wow local and international guests with her traditional Matera, farmhouse cooking. You’ll learn the authentic, original way to make fresh pasta, a typical pasta sauce and also two typical dishes from Matera. From secret techniques to our philosophy of simplicity, this special experience in the countryside of Southern Italy will whisk you away to a side of Italy that is truly authentic.

Greg picked us up near our hotel. It was a pleasant drive to the agriturismo. We learned about the family history of the farm and the evolution of the olive, lemon, and orange orchards. We tasted sugared fresh lemon slices along our tour. Greg introduced us to his lovely wife Silvia. She taught us how to make pasta and sauces for our lunch. The meal and wine were delicious finishing with their homemade limoncello. The whole afternoon was entertaining and informative. We highly recommend this class not only for the cooking lessons but, to see another side of Matera and Basilicata.

Greg and Silvia provided us an amazing culinary experience on their Agricultural property l’Assiolo. We not only learned so much about their Olive grove, it’s history, the process of producing some delicious extra virgin olive oil, and the Lucano food and wine, but we gained some invaluable cooking tips and methods of Italian cuisine. More importantly the food we learned how to cook, hands down the best meal we had while in Puglia.

We participated in a pasta cooking class and had a great time. The atmosphere was very relaxed and authentic. First, Greg told us many exciting facts about olive cultivation before we prepared our own pasta with Silvia. We learned a lot of new things. The explanations were in English and very easy to understand. Silvia had various tips on Italian cuisine in general and on making pasta in particular. What was especially nice was that we could enjoy the pasta we prepared together afterwards. The food was excellent, and the hosts were very friendly and took a lot of time for us and all our questions. We felt very welcome. Overall, it was a thoroughly successful and very authentic experience that we would recommend 100%.

This was the BEST experience we have had in a cooking class. Greg and Silvia were so kind and love what they do. They were very accommodating to our family especially having a child with special needs. We would highly recommend you booking a class with them to learn true authentic Italian cooking!

My husband and I took the cooking class with olive oil tour and had a wonderful experience. Greg picked us up from the Sassi and both Greg and Silvia were amazing. Both were so welcoming and accommodating and had great knowledge and experience to share of the history and stories of the region and its food. I love to cook and I learned a lot anyway and the food was so delicious. We highly recommend!
