This value-packed trip with a government-licensed and experienced English-speaking guide is a fantastic and efficient way to explore Onomichi!

Onomichi is a gritty, old-timey seaport town with hills full of temples, literary sites and cats. Local businesses increasingly embrace its retro-chic charm, and a visit is a glimpse of a quaint Japan of yesteryear. For many travelers, Onomichi is the base from which to cycle the Shimanami Kaidō, the system of road bridges that allows people to island-hop their way across the Inland Sea to Shikoku.

Let your guide know post booking what you would like to see and they will customize a four-hour tour that's best for you!

What To Expect

1

Senkoji Park

Senkō-ji is the best known and most impressive of Onomichi's temples. Among its features is the kyō-onrō, a bell tower whose bell always rings in the new year – the sound of this bell is registered as one of the '100 soundscapes of Japan'. The temple appears almost grown into the hillside, with views out to sea, and is reachable on the historic temple walk (after a steep 15- to 25-minute hike for most) or by the Senkō-ji-yama Ropeway.

Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art

Hirayama Ikuo was one of Japan's most famous painters, working in the traditional Japanese Nihonga style. The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art (平山郁夫美術館, Hirayama Ikuo Bijutsukan) is located on Ikuchijima Island, where the artist was born in 1930. Hirayama passed away in 2009. Many of the themes in Hirayama's work have persisted throughout his entire career. One is the concept of peace. Hirayama was a student in Hiroshima in 1945, and as such witnessed the destruction of the bomb and suffered from the effects of radiation. Another of his recurring themes was the cultural exchanges within the Orient, particularly the transmission of Buddhism to Japan. The Hirayama Museum is quite modern and well kept. There are three spacious exhibition halls, a tea lounge, and a museum shop. A variety of Hirayama's work from throughout his career are kept as part of the museum's permanent collection, and there are also special exhibitions.

  • Off the beaten path with a great guide!

Our guide, Namitsu, was kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and well prepared. She guided us through Onomichi. She explained the history of the town and guided us through its attractions, including many Buddhist shrines and a sky lift to an observation point. There’s a cat shrine, too. She found us a great place for ramen, and helped us with connections. We loved seeing the city with her. After the fast pace of Tokyo and Osaka, our side trip to Onomichi was refreshingly calm. But bring your walking shoes!

It's a great combo! Wonderful time with Yuji who led us in and around the Temples and Shrines of Onomichi slowly progressing to the top with amazing views. Very educational and informative experience regarding this sea side port city, just incredible. The food was terrific and we enjoyed the Okonomyaki and local beer, simply delicious. Yuji certainly provided a wonderful experience, Kanpai!

Onomichi is such an amazing place. Kazuha was extremely proud to present this lovely place of the world. I truly adore her passion for enriching the moments of travellers coming to this place. I learnt a lot about this merchant town from her, enjoyed the rich history and stunning views. I cannot implore people more to visit and enjoy Onomichi. If you have the pleasure of touring with Kazuha, I know you'll have the best time. Thank you again!

  • An Extraordinary Experience of Onomichi

My wife and I spent 2 days based in Onomichi. It's a place absolutely not to be missed if you are in the area. Our guide, Mami, truly enhanced our experience. From helping arrange our luggage storage/delivery to our accommodation when we arrived on the etSetora train, to taking us to a super yummy ramen spot, to checking out the local market and delightfully hidden away places, to leading us on a lovely walk on the hilltop (after taking the cute cabelcar!). It was a pleasure to spend time with Mami. I doubt anyone would regret taking this tour. It remains a highlight of our trip - also thanks to the glorious weather we had and sakura being close to full bloom, to be fair!
