IMPORTANT NOTICE: The main buildings of Shuri Castle were destroyed by fire in the night of October 31, 2019. The city hopes to rebuild the main building by 2022, the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan. A city district of Naha today, Shuri is the name of the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijō) served as the administrative center and residence of the Ryukyu kings for several centuries until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. The castle is included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom sites. Shuri Castle was originally built in the late 1300s, and played an integral role in the political unification of the island. Wars and fires destroyed the castle multiple times over the centuries, most recently in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The current buildings are beautiful reconstructions dating from 1992. The approach to the castle's central buildings leads through multiple gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate. The castle's hilltop location allows for nice views over Naha along the way.
Kokusaidori
Naha’s International Street was known post-WW II as the miracle mile for its almost-instantaneous reconstruction. With rows of souvenirs and restaurants, it is a staple sightseeing spot for visitors to Okinawa. Popular spots to visit include the central Makishi Public Market, dining establishments and the Don Quijote, Japan’s largest discount store. If you’re going for a stroll at night, there are izakaya where you can listen to performances of traditional Okinawa folk music and shamisen players.

It is good but a lot of walking for those with mobility issues. It only allows for a few sites within a 6hr tour

Outstanding day in Naha with Mr Hyde. Communications were excellent before and during tour. Seamless pickup at the port. We saw and learned a lot about the history and culture of Okinawa and its strategic importance today. Mr Hyde shared his personal stories of life after WW2. The Navy underground Headquarters is amazing as well as the peace memorial & museum. Both are very well done. The car was spotless and very comfortable. We highly recommend this tour as top notch way to see and understand the relationship of Okinawa to Japan, the region and the world.

It was a nice day with Kumiko. Full of history from the last days of the war and from the Naha area. Also a nice restaurant with super delicious food. Good value for money.

An excellent tour with our guide Hiromi & private driver. We visited Shuri Castle (reconstruction nearly complete), the former Japanese Underground Naval HQ, had time for lunch & shopping, and then visited Naminoue shrine. Hiromi met us at the port terminal with a sign. We had a private driver and large car/taxi for the day for our group of 4. Tour lasted 6 hours and then dropped back at the terminal. Highlight was the Naval HQ - very interesting! Shuri Castle was beautiful and worth it, but definitely strenuous for our group (lots of stairs.) Hiromi did a great job explaining the sites/shrine & arranging for the car to pick us up at easy spots at end of each location.

Hiromi was great. Very knowledgeable and spoke english well. Very organized with lots Pictures and slides to provide more detail and context. While it rained most of the day we were able to miss most of it by rearranging the places to visit. Don't worry about the steps to the underground Naval Headquarters. They are quite easy.
