Botanic Gardens

Botanic Gardens is an important part of Belfast's Victorian heritage and a popular meeting place for residents, students and tourists. Botanic Gardens was established in 1828 by the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society, in response to public interest in horticulture and botany. Originally known as the Belfast Botanic Garden, the site contained exotic tree species and impressive plant collections from the southern hemisphere, many of which can still be seen in the park. Today, the park is popular with residents, students and visitors and is an important venue for concerts, festivals and other events. It is home to the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. Occupying 28 acres (110,000 m2) of south Belfast, the gardens are popular with office workers, students and tourists. They are located on Stranmillis Road in Queen's Quarter, with Queen's University nearby. The Ulster Museum is located at the main entrance. The gardens opened in 1828 as the private Royal Belfast Botanical Gardens. It continued as a private park for many years, only opening to members of the public on Sundays prior to 1895. Then it became a public park in 1895 when the Belfast Corporation bought the gardens from the Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society. The Belfast Corporation was the predecessor of Belfast City Council, the present owner. The gardens' most notable feature is the Palm House conservatory. The foundation stone was laid by the Marquess of Donegall in 1839 and work was completed in 1840. It is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear cast iron glasshouses in the world.

  • Excellent Guide; Fascinating History

Barry was a fantastic guide… he was well versed in all aspects of the history of Belfast and his knowledge (and personal experiences) of the Troubles were both sobering and fascinating… We saw all 4 corners of the City and I came out with a better understanding of this vibrant and at times troubled city. Would absolutely recommend!

Very interesting tour with Barry who was very knowledgeable. Got to see the murals and he took photos for us which he sent over afterwards. However the tour we booked said 2 hours and this was 1.5 hours.

Our driver was competent, friendly & helpful providing a running commentary on the tour. The vehicle was clean & comfortable & the driver was obviously well versed in the Troubles & the outcome. Unfortunately, some of his commentary was strongly biased in favour of the IRA & its activities, although it is also fair to say that my partner was not particularly concerned with this aspect. Overall a satisfactory outcome.

Although my husband and I were well aware of the challenges/conflicts that Northern Island, specifically Belfast, faced between the Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants, it was amazing to have a first hand account of what living during these times was like. Our tour guide, Joe, was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history and we as outsiders could feel his passion as evidenced by stopping at some historically important places during the conflicts and even presently. This was an incredible tour and so happy we did not miss it. We enjoyed the city of Belfast very much, the cleanliness and how safe we felt walking around, so this tour added to our pleasure of learning first hand.

We were very fortunate to have Barry take us on a comprehensive tour of the murals as well as an insight into the past and present in relation The Troubles. Additionally he included other areas of interest and a general overview of his wonderful city of Belfast. No questions were off limits, and he gave me an insight and broad education on a a disturbing part of Irish history ,that I had been grappling with for many years. Outstanding tour by an outstanding tour guide. Many thanks from Mark -Australian Firefighter.
