The Shimanami Kaido is the most famous cycling touring place in Japan. It consists of 6 islands and 6 bridges from Imabari city to Onomichi city across the Seto inland sea. "Shimanami" means "range of islands (like a range of mountains)" and "Kaido" means "seaside rode", so it is good expression of the feature of this place.

What To Expect
Onomichi
One of the most unique attractions of Onomichi is the Shimanami Kaido. The route, which passes across bridges and islands of the Seto Inland Sea, is the only land connection between Japan's main island of Honshu and Shikoku that is traversable by cyclists and pedestrians. Along the way there are two particular attractions of interest to visitors: the Hirayama Museum and the unique Kosanji Temple.
Mukaishima
The first island is Mukaijima, though it is recommended that you take the short ferry across the channel as the first bridge is quite a way out of town, has no dedicated bike lane, and involves quite a climb to reach.

5.00Our tour guide was very helpful and accommodating. I was surprised at how industrial the Onomichi bike route was. It was beautiful but the shipyards along the way was surprising. I was also surprised that the bike route wasn’t the safest at times. We opted to bike on the sidewalk as we had our kids with us. The bridges and views were beautiful and the tour guide was great!

5.00We had the perfect day for our cycling tour! Our guide took great care of us, stopped along the way at beautiful spots, explained the history, ensured our safety and created a memorable ride! Would have loved to ride down the hills faster! ;-) We were off to a great start, however, I misunderstood that there was no shuttle back to Onomichi!!! Our guide and his driver helped get us back to Onomichi by bus, which took three hours, due to accidents on the two lane road. They were so kind! They were waiting for the bus to arrive at a transfer point and called a cab for us! Above and beyond!
