There’s some amazing history, culture , scenery and food to be had across the stans. We had a good selection of guides although there was a degree of overlap and repetition which could have been avoided. (Too many bazaars for example.) Each of the guides was very knowledgeable in their history and legends. Also there was a general lack of the overarching narrative of the Silk Road which we had expected to get. On the downside with a small group tour we would have expected more integration of the guides with the group. Several evenings left alone as a group and guides staying at alternate hotels not good for the group dynamics

Our guide - Tania Right from the beginning Tania was friendly, polite and very honest. At the airport where she picked us up from a seller came to us to sell us a SIM card. We asked Tania and she advised not to buy from him but rather from a reputable dealer. The salesman was visibly annoyed but we picked up from body language that she wanted first and foremost to look after us as real human beings and not just foreign tourist to be taken advantage of. Tania always went the extra mile to make sure we were happy and taken care of. Even during non working hours Tania was always reachable and ready to help. She organised taxi services for us, when she really was not required to do so. Tania has a very caring and inclusive nature. She even helped to provide and pack away plates and food at shared breakfast, lunch and dinner events. Tania is also very knowledgeable and always welcomed questions and explained everything very well. Thank you Tania You are the best and are a very great tour guide.

This review is for the Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan component only. Both countries are fabulous to visit for many reasons including clean, green, safe, great food, inexpensive, great scenery, fantastic history and kind people. Our tour guide Valentina was phenomenal and she made a significant positive difference. Tina is kind, thoughtful, organised, knowledgeable, timely, caring and thoroughly invested in ensuring all participants have the best possible time every day. Our driver didn’t speak much English however he was a good driver. The group dinners in Kyrgyzstan were good with tasty food and a good atmosphere. The yurt experience felt inauthentic and lacked atmosphere as multiple tour groups streamed in. There was no water for showers when we arrived, the tanks were empty and we had to wait for them to be refilled. Limited facilities for the number of people and unclean toilets. The bread making demo was ok but again, production line as the tour groups moved through. I feel like the itinerary for Almaty could be reviewed for a deeper experience. Thank you for sharing your countries. 🌸

Our visit included 2 nights in Bishkek, a night at Issyk Kul, a night at Karakol and then 2 nights in Almaty. We were a group of 14 and our guide Tina made the trip very enjoyable. She has an excellent way with people, stays calm in difficult situations and most of all is a really fun person who has a great knowledge of the area and it’s history and great enthusiasm for her country. We would highly recommend her to anyone who plans a visit.

Expansive tour gave a perspective of 5 amazing and unique countries. The culture, landscape, architecture and wildlife were mind boggling. The heat was a little intimidating, but enjoyed cooler weather as the altitude increased. Although the mausoleums and mosques were grandiose and beautiful, I preferred the more rural landscape, local bazaars, hikes and interactions with locals the most.

We were on the "Best of the Stans" tour and had a great trip. We started in Kyrgyzstan where our tour guide Tatiana was excellent, and she adjusted the tour events to cater for the people arriving on different days - and always arriving late at night. Tatiana re-arranged the initial folk music presentation and meal so that everyone could attend. The demonstration of eagle hunting was the outstanding experience of our time in Kyrgyzstan, and probably the most memorable part of the journey. The tour only spent one full day in Kazakhstan, mostly in Almaty, where our guide was a different lady also named Tatiana. The difference between mountainous Kyrgyzstan and arid Kazakhstan seemed to suddenly happen at the border, and then Almaty was suddenly a big city, so a completely different experience. Each of the countries was a different experience from the others. Our travel by air to Tashkent in Uzbekistan, then fast train to the heat of Bukhara, were good ways to break up the travelling by bus. Here our guide Din had a different approach, sometimes using slideshows to illustrate a point, and often taking group photos and selfies which he posted to the WhatsApp group. He took a very modern approach to tour guiding. Bukhara was the hottest place we visited, and lowest altitude, and then the air gradually cooled as we followed the river and Silk Road back upstream by bus to Samarkand and then into Tajikistan. The light show in Registan Square at Samarkand is spectacular. Tajikistan was a different experience again. The people seemed more friendly here - many came up and said "Hello", testing out their English, older people as well as school kids. Travelling across the mountain passes between Dushanbe and Khujand, the scenery was amazing, with snow-capped mountains, nearly vertical valleys, and a rushing river and green farmland at the bottom. At museums tour guide "D" walked and talked us through the exhibits, explaining what we saw and how the history fitted into modern Tajikistan. And he had interesting stories about his experiences as guide, and arranged an impromptu dinner at the end that was a nice way for our group finish in Tajikistan. The guides make the tours excellent. They are really the main people we tourists talk to in their countries, so there experiences tell us a lot about how the people live and what is important to them. They could explain the government systems in their countries, and how they work. It is different from the Australian experience, and you can't get that understanding from looking at the monuments and statues. And the bus drivers are really important too, only their skills are less obvious - having to drive 500m backwards down a narrow lane to the Yurt camp, driving hours along the terrible roads in Kyrgyzstan (probably worrying about the suspension on their beautiful bus), handling the hairpin bends high above the river at the narrow passes, and being available for the varied arrival and departure times of the tourists. And we had a good group of people to tour with, everyone got along well. With the international situation in Iran affecting Dubai as well, and Australians nervous about travelling there, that made it more difficult for the tour organisers, so thanks go to them for their efforts catering for our concerns.
