What To Expect
Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo)
At our first food stop, we’ll dive into the most authentic local street foods, surrounded by the historic atmosphere of the Temple of Apollo. You’ll savor arancini, the world-famous rice balls stuffed with a variety of ingredients like meat, cooked ham, spinach, pistachios, or aubergines, fried to golden perfection for a true taste of Sicilian tradition. In the summertime, you can also enjoy a fried fish cone, filled with a selection of fresh fish caught that very day. With the ancient columns of the Temple of Apollo as your backdrop and the lively energy of Ortigia’s streets all around, tasting these local specialties becomes a perfect blend of history, culture, and flavor.

Next, we’ll have the chance to taste the Sicilian impanata, a traditional artisanal specialty. This oval-shaped, golden calzone can be filled with tomato sauce, vegetables, meat, cheese, potatoes and sausage, or even shrimp and black olives, offering a rich explosion of bold flavors. Enjoying it in Piazza Archimede, surrounded by the grandeur of historic palaces and the lively energy of locals and visitors alike, turns this tasting into more than a meal, it’s a true taste of Syracuse’s culinary and cultural heart.

Excellent authentic food tour of Ortigia

5.00We had such a lovely experience on this food tour and it ended up being one of our highlights in Ortigia. Our guide, Iryna, grew up in Ortigia, and you could really tell how passionate she is about the area. She was so knowledgeable, shared lots of interesting history along the way, and even told us about nearby places like Noto. She was also a great communicator and made everyone feel welcome and included throughout the tour. We stopped at Casa del Broderi to try their famous panini sandwiches, which definitely lived up to the hype. We also sampled traditional fried fish from a local lady, which was so good that we went back several times afterwards during our stay! We tried delicious arancini from a family-run business, followed by beautiful fresh granita made using traditional ingredients and methods. To finish, we enjoyed cannoli and limoncello, and loved the cannoli so much that we returned for gelato and more cannoli almost every evening for the rest of our trip. What I really liked about this tour was that it wasn’t just about the food – it also gave us a real insight into the history, culture and local traditions of Ortigia. Iryna’s local knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience feel really authentic. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Syracuse and Ortigia, especially if you love good food and want to discover places you might not otherwise find on your own.

5.00Beautiful food tour that incorporates a pleasant walk through the island and some urban hidden gems of Ortigia. Great selection of fresh and local dishes, including arancini, fried fish and desserts. Tour was friendly toward dietary restrictions. Maria was a fantastic and friendly guide. Highly recommend!

5.00This was a fantastic experience with our guide Iryna. It is such a special opportunity to learn about a historic place from a person who grew up there. She was extremely engaging, informative and fun. We tried foods we otherwise wouldn’t have and learned a lot not only about food but Ortigia. It was very fun! Highly recommend!!

5.00Giuseppe was an awesome tour guide! He not only took us for delicious local food and desserts but we learned about the history, culture and art along the way. As a bonus we also got to try different liqueurs like limoncello, pistachio and more. Get ready to turn around Ortigia, get some steps, eat like a local and learn along the way!
