What To Expect
This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Meet Margarita at her home on a typical residential street of Mexico City’s Tlacopac San Ángel neighborhood. Start your experience in Margarita’s garden, weather permitting, where you will enjoy a welcome drink and appetizers. Then head to Margarita's kitchen for your cooking class, during which you will learn to make 2-3 traditional Mexican dishes. Learn to make tortillas from scratch, which you might turn into quesadillas that you can snack on as you make your next dishes, a traditional soup such as creamy chorizo-bean soup or tortilla soup, along with a main dish such as chile rellenos or pork tenderloin in tamarind sauce. You will also learn to make Mexican rice, a classic side served with many main dishes in Mexico that involves toasting the rice and then cooking it together along with a variety of aromatic vegetables. Then sit down together to enjoy your meal at Margarita’s dining table or, in warm summer months, outdoors in Margarita’s garden. End your meal with a traditional rice pudding or a spicy chocolate mousse and coffee or tea.

5.00Margarita’s cooking class: We had a wonderful time cooking at Margarita’s home and would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Mexico City. Her home is beautiful and located in a lovely part of the city, creating the perfect setting for an authentic and memorable afternoon. From the moment we arrived, Margarita was warm, attentive, and highly professional. More than just a cooking class, this felt like an invitation into Mexican culture and family life. Being welcomed into her home gave us the opportunity to learn not only about Mexican cuisine, but also about the traditions, values, and stories that surround it. Margarita answered all of our questions thoughtfully and made sure everyone in our group had the chance to participate. She was especially wonderful with the kids, involving them throughout the process and teaching techniques in a way that was both engaging and easy to understand. Margarita thoughtfully accommodated our dietary needs and tailored the menu to our group. For our class, we prepared sopes, cactus salad, chicken mole, Mexican white rice, and a delicious guava dessert. Every dish was flavorful, easy to recreate at home, and offered insight into traditional Mexican cooking. Her attention to detail was exceptional, and she shared countless tips and techniques that we will continue to use long after our vacation. There is a wonderful balance between cooking, learning, relaxing, and enjoying the food you prepare together. It never felt rushed, and we appreciated having time to savor both the meal and the experience. By the end of the afternoon, we felt as though we had spent time with a friend rather than simply attended a cooking class. Margarita’s kindness, generosity, and passion for sharing her culture made this one of the highlights of our trip. We would gladly do this again on a future visit to Mexico City.

5.00Margarita was a wonderful instructor and incredibly engaging. We cooked a full dinner with appetizers, main course, sides and dessert. The 2 salsas prepared beat anything we can buy in the states, and so simple. Getting to know her and cooking alongside her was a highlight of our stay.

5.00We had a great time with Margarita. She was very warm and welcoming and taught us a lot about Mexican food. We had a great time chatting while we cooked, and she knew a lot about the history of the food not just the techniques needed to prepare it, which we found very interesting. She was very accommodating with the dietary requirements we had too (one vegan, one non-vegan). She had chosen recipes which were vegan, but could easily have some cheese or cream added if wanted. I think all of the food was gluten free too (not that we asked for it, I think it just so happened by chance). We made three courses in total: sopes, chiles rellenos with mexican rice, and poached guava. She had prepared some of the stuff already, such as cooking the mushrooms for the chiles filling, which was good as it helped us focus on the stuff that was new and it meant we had time to do all three courses. She has a lovely, peaceful garden where we chatted and ate the food we made, and her husband even joined for the final part which was also very nice! We wholeheartedly would recommend the experience!

5.00Margarita was very communicative and made sure we knew how to get there. Margarita has a beautiful home. She sat down and talked with us before starting. She explained all the recipes at the beginning and everything was well organized. She gave us the information for each dish and everything was tasty. These are recipes we may not have tried on our own. My sister and niece have never tried a cooking class in someone’s home and agreed it was a unique experience! She had us promise to make the dishes at home and also gave us alternative ways to change the dishes up. We also received restaurant recommendations for Mexico City which we appreciated! We are ready to tackle the menu at home!

5.00Margarita offers a very good cooking class, with instructions in English & Spanish. She took time to make sure we both understood all the ingredients & steps to make an appetizer, a main dish with side item, and dessert. She explained different ways we could adapt the dishes to meet our needs when we return to our own kitchen. We particularly loved the sauces we prepared. We learned an entirely new-to-us way to make rice as well. We dined al fresco on a lovely patio that felt like perfect oasis for our meal. The class was relaxed & felt like being taught by a close friend or family member. We recommend this class wholeheartedly.

5.00This was an absolutely wonderful experience, and it added so much to an already great trip. The sights and sounds of Mexico City are amazing. Meeting and cooking with Margarita - in her beautiful home - added another dimension. Margarita is fantastic - welcoming, warm, friendly, a fantastic cook -- and an excellent teacher. Our group of five enjoyed everything about this experience . From seeing the lovely home of someone who is a lifelong resident of the City, and working with her to prepare the meal -- and finally to enjoying a delicious meal and interesting conversation. Margarita was genuinely welcoming and we felt like we were friends from the moment we arrived. She was extremely well prepared for our lesson, and shared numerous helpful tips for recreating our feast when we returned home. Highly, highly recommend!

5.00We had a brilliant day with Margarita. We spent part of the day inside her lovely home and part in her beautiful garden. The space as a whole was cozy and welcoming. Her cooking instruction was excellent. I appreciated the menu of delicious food that was not overly complicated so that I can recreate the dishes later at home. Overall, I would highly recommend this experience and if I return to Mexico City I will do it again. Thank you Margarita.
