This is not a typical walk through Gion.
Instead of simply passing through Kyoto’s most famous district, this experience helps you understand what most visitors are actually looking at, but rarely notice.
Led by a local guide who has lived in Japan for over ten years, this walk is shaped by daily life, storytelling, and a genuine passion for Kyoto’s culture.
As we move through Gion at a relaxed pace, with time for photos and questions, you will gain a clear understanding of how the world of geisha truly functions, their arts, traditions, and the rules that shape their daily lives.
Rather than focusing on chasing geisha sightings, this experience gives you the context to understand the atmosphere, the behavior, and the meaning behind what you see around you.
Gion can be busy, but once you understand what you are looking at, the experience becomes completely different.
By the end of the walk, you will not just have seen Gion, you will understand it.

Gion Shirakawa
A peaceful ribbon of water flowing through the heart of Gion. Lined with willow trees, traditional tea houses, and stone lanterns, Shirakawa feels like a step back in time. This is one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets, quiet, elegant, and deeply connected to the world of geisha and old-town life.
Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine
A small but powerful Shinto shrine hidden beside the canal. Dedicated to protection and good fortune, Tatsumi Shrine has long been prayed to by geisha and local residents. Its intimate size and quiet presence perfectly capture the spiritual side of everyday Kyoto.

We had the most fantastic and fascinating walk through the Gion district. Our French guide, Michael, was absolutely delightful—friendly, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. He shared so much interesting history and insight, and we came away having learnt a huge amount. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kyoto, especially with Michael as your guide.

Michael has such a passion for Japan and for history. We had such a great and informative 2 hours. Saw some beautiful Buddhist and Shinto shrines, learned so much about geisha history (and unlearned some things that are not true). Michael also gave us plenty of recommendations of things we could do on our own. Both my kids, young adults, often highly skeptical of tours also really got a lot out of the tour. Thank you Michael!!!
