The 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour was founded in 1996 by Lorcan Collins, author, historian and Dubliner. This two hour walking tour meets daily at The International Bar where participants receive a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and some explanatory literature. After a brief introduction to the build up to the Easter Rising of 1916 the tour then visits the sites of the revolutionary period including the GPO, City Hall and Dublin Castle. The tour also covers the War of Independence when Michael Collins battled for Irish freedom from 1919-21 and also includes a discussion on the Irish Civil War, 1922-23. The tour is highly educational but also great fun and very interactive. Prior knowledge of events is not required.

1916 Rebellion Walking Tour

This is our starting point, the famous International Bar where Lorcan Collins has been running the 1916 Tour since 1996. You are welcome to come earlier and enjoy a drink and a read of the introductory literature supplied by your guide. The tour begins with a short introduction to the build up to the revolutionary period, starting with the Great Hunger / Irish Famine of the 1840's and culminating with the 1916 Rising. This gives all participants an understanding of the events leading up to the revolution and also gives everyone a chance to ask questions and get to know the guide. We will let you know what route we are going to take, below are some of the examples of places that we typically visit but we vary the route so that the tour does not become stale but you will be happy with the various places that you get to see.

I loved this tour! I knew very little about the history of Dublin or the 1916 rebellion before this, but this tour was a fantastic way to learn more about it. The guides were very kind and knowledgeable, and I and my group learned so much about the city and its past. The tour really emphasises how the history is still visible and present in the modern-day city. If you're visiting Dublin and have any interest in history or rebellions or you just love Ireland, I definitely recommend this tour!

If you are a fan of Revolutionary Irish history, you NEED to do this tour. Our guide, Lorcan Collins, was exceptionally knowledgeable and well spoken. Throughout the tour he took time to take questions and offer insightful feedback. It was very much a conversation as well as a tour. We visited a number of places that held importance during the 1916 Easter Rising and throughout the tour you could truly tell that Lorcan was not only knowledgeable but also fiercely passionate about the history. This is what you want in a tour guide and I say again; book this tour! You will enjoy it.

After a 30 minute lively and instructive introductory talk about the history of rebellion in Ireland (not just 1916) our guide took us around places of historical interest. He was very well informed, happy to answer questions, and entertained the group with anecdotes, some amusing, some very moving, and with rebel songs. It was an educational and entertaining 2 hours. Highly recommended.

Amazing tour full of history and landmarks. The tour featured 3 songs that caught us by surprise and they were very moving. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and did answer very important questions that we had. Definitely a time well spent I only wish I could get an extended version as I found it very interesting and short despite the tour being about 3h

Highly informative tour, and a highlight of our trip. An indoor introduction to the event and some Irish history, followed by a couple hours of relatively flat walking. Our guide was excellent, and even included a couple of songs of the era. The tour begins at the International Bar on Wicklow Street and culminates at the General Post Office on O’Connell Street.

Unbelievable tour. But you clowns need to quit telling people it's 2 hours when it took 3. Almost 30 people in the group was too many. Guide was a 5 the rest based above was a 3

  • Absolutely a must to get a feel for the History ☘️
