The 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour was founded in 1996 by Lorcan Collins, author, historian and Dubliner. This two hour walking tour meets daily at The International Bar where participants receive a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and some explanatory literature. After a brief introduction to the build up to the Easter Rising of 1916 the tour then visits the sites of the revolutionary period including the GPO, City Hall and Dublin Castle. The tour also covers the War of Independence when Michael Collins battled for Irish freedom from 1919-21 and also includes a discussion on the Irish Civil War, 1922-23. The tour is highly educational but also great fun and very interactive. Prior knowledge of events is not required.

What To Expect
1916 Rebellion Walking Tour
This is our starting point, the famous International Bar where Lorcan Collins has been running the 1916 Tour since 1996. You are welcome to come earlier and enjoy a drink and a read of the introductory literature supplied by your guide. The tour begins with a short introduction to the build up to the revolutionary period, starting with the Great Hunger / Irish Famine of the 1840's and culminating with the 1916 Rising. This gives all participants an understanding of the events leading up to the revolution and also gives everyone a chance to ask questions and get to know the guide. We will let you know what route we are going to take, below are some of the examples of places that we typically visit but we vary the route so that the tour does not become stale but you will be happy with the various places that you get to see.
City Hall
City Hall was occupied during the 1916 Rising by the Irish Citizen Army so we will stop here and talk about that aspect of Easter Week 1916.

5.00The 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour in Dublin was an absolutely fantastic experience and one I highly recommend to anyone visiting Ireland. Lorcan Collins is an outstanding guide who brings history to life with incredible knowledge and passion. He provides deep insight into the events leading up to the 1916 Easter Rising, the fight for Irish independence, and the political and social tensions of early 20th-century Ireland. Walking the actual streets where history unfolded made the experience even more powerful and meaningful. This tour is a must for any Dublin tourist, especially those interested in Irish history, revolution, and the story behind Ireland’s path to independence.

5.00An amazing two hours where I learned about the 1916 Rising, had rebel songs sung to me, had bullet holes in buildings and statues explained, and more. This was among the best history tours I’ve taken and could not recommend more energetically. Go to one!

5.00Adam was a highly knowledgeable, funny and friendly guide, who was able to answer any questions from the group with ease. The tour route wasn't demanding even in 25 degrees of heat and the various stops were well worth it in terms of adding unknown aspects of Irish history even to Dubliners like ourselves.

5.00My partner and I loved this tour, it was so in depth and even made mention of other key dates and happenings as we passed certain areas. It was raining throughout the whole tour but we barely noticed due to the great sharing of stories, singing and learning as Gaeilge along the way. Great knowledge, brilliant story telling and able to hold a crowd well, we had Liam guiding our tour. Highly recommend

3.00Some of the other reviews made this sound like the quintessential must-do Irish history tour for anyone visiting Dublin. Although the tour is great for what it is, people should be aware that this is a deep dive into a specific 6-day event in Ireland's history. It is appropriate for people who already have a good knowledge of Irish history and are looking for a more detailed analysis of the 1916 Easter Rising specifically. People who do not know much about Irish history and are looking for more of a broad introductory tour should look elsewhere. I would also note that the description says the tour also covers the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War but we did not get into those events in any significant detail during our tour.

5.00Highly recommend this tour! Very important part of Irish history that nobody should miss learning about. Phaelin (sorry if I’m misspelling!!) was a wonderful and informative guide with clear passion for the stories he tells and the historical figures he brings to life. It seemed like it was a little bigger group than maybe they usually had but Phaelin not only made sure we were all safely getting to where we needed to be on a busy Sunday in Dublin but also that we could all hear and have a more personalized experience despite the group size. Don’t miss it!
