2

Acatenango, La Soledad

Your journey begins with a comfortable 45–60 minute shared minibus ride from our office to La Soledad, followed by an ascent to basecamp via a shorter route used by only a few selected agencies. By avoiding the most demanding section of the mountain, the hike becomes more scenic, more enjoyable, and far less exhausting, allowing you to arrive at camp with more energy to fully enjoy the experience. This also makes it a great option for guests who want to add the Fuego hike in the afternoon, one of the most dramatic highlights of the adventure. Upon arrival at basecamp, each group must provide 1 liter of water to the guide for the preparation of warm drinks. In the evening, relax by the fire with hot chocolate, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest in our new cabins for up to 6 guests, with sleeping bags and glass doors facing the volcano. Our guides speak basic English; a bilingual guide is available at an additional cost. Wake up to fresh mountain air and unforgettable volcano views at dawn.

Fuego Volcano

Experience the thrill of standing just 200 meters from Fuego Volcano’s eruptions on this adventurous 3.5-hour round trip! At an altitude of 3,768 meters (12,362 feet), this hike offers a safe yet awe-inspiring vantage point to witness one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes. Departing at 4 PM, the hike requires intermediate fitness and takes you to the volcano, where you’ll spend 30 minutes watching the eruptions up close. Participants must come prepared with water, a jacket, and a headlamp, as this is a difficult hike. For safety reasons, travelers are not allowed to approach Fuego alone—doing so will immediately end the trip to ensure everyone’s well-being. The price is Q300 per person and Q700 for solo travelers. Join us for an unforgettable adventure!

Day 2

Acatenango Sunrise / Summit

1

Turistico Volcan Acatenango

Wake up at 4:00 AM for the optional summit hike and, weather permitting, experience a breathtaking sunrise over the volcanic landscape. The summit visit usually includes around 45 minutes to take in the views before descending back to basecamp for a hot breakfast. After breakfast, the group begins the descent to La Soledad, with return to Antigua around 12:00 PM. Please note that summit access always depends on weather and safety conditions, so in some cases we may not go up. Because this is a collective tour, at least half of the group must agree to do the summit hike in order for it to take place. We are not able to change this policy for individual guests. If you would like to go to the summit regardless of how many other guests join, a private guide can be arranged for an additional Q700.

We are 4 friends who booked with Pachamama Tour to visit the volcano Acatenango and volcano of fire, it was an unforgettable adventure, spectacular the visited... being so close to the activity of the volcano is indescribable the emotion that is felt. I recommend the agency, for its commitment, responsibility and the attention received. The guides are very friendly and take great care of the integrity of the people

  • DO NOT BOOK WITH PACHAMAMA TOURS

❌Do not book with Pachamama Tours !!❌ It is my first review on here but I just have to. Everything is twice as expensive as other tour companies and for nothing extra. We ate the same food and slept in same style accommodation as groups that paid 70$ instead of over 150$. The Fuego hike costs us 300Q instead of 250Q for the other groups, the walking sticks cost 125Q to rent instead of 25-50Q at the bottom of the hike, why ?? In addition, we arrived at base camp at 3pm and waited to go on the Fuego hike at 8pm ! Even-though most groups left at 4:30-5pm. This was not due to bad weather, just the guide taking his sweet time. And talking about the guide, he made the not so sporty people feel bad when taking breaks as he always wanted to go faster. Overall, Acatenango is insane to do ! Just not with this company ❌ don’t fall for all the other companies being full, there are plenty in Antigua, just wait to be there and go to several by foot !

  • Bad experience because of the agency

Pachamama Tours just want to take as much money as they can. They shouldn’t be that popular being a bad agency. Not good at all, they don’t have client service when you arrive, the price for extras like bags rent is super high, and the food is so bad because only egg and bread for the 2 breakfast, horrible sandwich for lunch. As least 1 snack per person is not expensive, you’re not paying little. In the cabins they neither have pillows. The only good thing was the guide named Manuel, but that’s all. I compare this agency with others and is the worse. Take this as a review. Walking to the volcano is not easy but at least you’ll like have the basics things to feel more comfortable and you’re paying for that. I don’t recommend Pachamama, they should focus in all the details. I would like to give a good review but my experience was not good and neither for other friends :(

  • Small group and nice guide but bad food and bitter Fuego experience

Pros: Compared to other groups, the group was small with only 6 participants. You save yourself 45 minutes of climbing because you get higher than other groups. The guide was very friendly and responded well to the individual and we could take enough breaks to get used to the altitude. The cabins have camp beds with mattresses and partially transparent front, depending on the sleeping place you can see Fuego from the Brtt. Cons: - I was sent a PDF with information about the tour, which is not current. There are incorrect information, e.g. about the food provided. Also, I was the only one who was already at the office at 6.30 am because it was in this PDF, everyone else came partly an hour later. At 8.30am, we only left. I would have liked to have slept longer on such a busy day and don't need 2 hours for breakfast. - The food is not good. Definitely bring your own snacks. - The whole group went to the Fuego climb. An hour before Fuego, one person from the group was unwell and we took many breaks and waited. In the end we didn't get to the end point of Fuego because the guide said that it was too late now. I found that very frustrating because it would have been only 10 to 15 minutes and you could already see the point. Later he told me again that it was also due to the weather and that the spot can be very dangerous. When we went down, however, we were still met by people who also went up. I find a 2.5 hour hike hardly worthwhile if you then stop just before the finish. Very disappointing. I understand that all the TNs in the group need to be taken into account, but I would have liked the guide to have communicated earlier that we could not make it at this rate and given the "still fit" participants the chance to go to the end point. Especially since there were other TNs who weren't waiting for the group (although this was explicitly requested) and just went on alone and were ultimately "rewarded" for getting to the end point.

  • Life Changing Opportunity- Be content and present and enjoy your group. Pachamama thank you very much for this memory!

So I was a solo traveler and a little concerned however quickly realized the bond of this challenging journey doing it with others was one of the highlights. I was a little concerned because there was availability of a tour a few days before where all others were booked. However, quickly it became clear that should not be a concern. So much to say so will try to summarize: PROS: 1. Pachamama staff was welcoming, informative, spoke English, and clear they wanted you to be prepared and enjoy your tour. 2. They provided extra jackets, gloves, and hats. ( however gloves if you have a good pair bring as it gets cold) 3. Pachamama office before leaving provided a basic breakfast but plenty to fuel up on and coffee/tea. They also had water bottles, snacks for purchase as reasonable price to pack for hike. 4. Love that we had small group of 6 total and 1 guide Manuel who took good care of us on the mountain. 5. Starting point further up the mountain was a huge plus as it cuts down time on an already very challenging hike. ( Advice: Go slow/ take breaks/ lose your pride as not a competition but a journey when you get to new camp you want to enjoy and not be so worn out or sick.) 6. Accommodations at base camp - beautiful view to watch volcano erupting. The rest were very basic and provided a roof over our head, warm fire, hot meal, hot coco which was great but again basic but grateful to have. 7. Another 6 people did 4 wheel drive vehicle up mountain and slight hike at the end to camp. They definitely were more well rested, and had very good things to say about their drive. Maybe something to consider as I found just sitting at camp and taking it all in was by far the best part and wish had more time to do. CONS: ( not really huge but important to know) 1. Base camp could use more chairs to accommodate everyone. Only one of the 3 sleeping cabins had a view of El Fuego and night and one I was in was tight sleeping 4 people and not much room to move around at all. But roof over head and view outside was great- which is reason there. If looking for top notch cabins may want to look at another company. 2. Our guide was great when it came to reading group with breaks and needs and very attentive however did not speak English, fortunately many people in group did so it was ok. Overall El Fuego was amazing, blessed with gorgeous weather, consistent eruptions and beautiful people to share the journey with. Pachamama rocks and definitely recommend, but if you are someone who is very detailed oriented and wants to know everything ahead and expect no hiccups maybe a different company would be best for you. Hope that helps everyone. Thank you very much to Pachamama for making this trek possible and providing me opportunity of memories that will last a life time. God willing I will be back to do again!

The experience of the fire volcano and the top of the acatenango volcano are unique and worth the adventure, you don’t get exhausted from walking, so you can go to the additional hikes without problem and strive to know each volcano, nature is amazing. The bad news is that some 4x4 drivers don’t treat you well are rushed and annoying if you delay a tour. The rest is excellent. I took the picture but live is much better than any camera.

Highly recommended! Pachamama is an amazing company. The tour guides are friendly and very knowledgeable about the culture of Antigua and the Fuego Volcano. Enie is one of the kindest and most helpful guides l've met-truly outstanding. The cabins are beautiful, and the team takes great care of you from start to finish. You won't regret booking with them. Great company, great people-especially Enie!

The volcanic hike was a consistently beautiful and atmospheric experience, which I can highly recommend. From the very beginning you could feel a special atmosphere that immediately captivated you. The path itself was pleasant to walk and always offered moments when you could let the landscape have a calm effect on you. I especially liked that the tour was well organized and you felt safe at all times. Although each section seemed different, the overall impression remained harmonious and impressive, without becoming strenuous or overloaded. Time passed surprisingly quickly because you could just enjoy what was happening around you. Overall, it was a really nice experience that leaves a lasting, positive impression and I would be happy to recommend it – ideal for anyone who wants to experience a pleasant, uncomplicated and harmonious hike in a special environment.
