This tour offers a deep and personal connection to Lalibela — not just a historic site, but a living community. Your guide, Tewabe, is a licensed local expert born and raised here. He doesn’t just show you the churches; he welcomes you into his own family home.
Enjoy a home-cooked Ethiopian lunch, take part in an authentic coffee ceremony, and learn basic Amharic while sharing real moments with local people. Explore Lalibela’s vibrant local market, where villagers gather daily to trade and socialize. This is not a typical group tour — it’s a cultural exchange and spiritual journey led by someone who truly knows the land, legends, and lifestyle.
Experience a real church service, walk like a local to the rock-hewn churches, visit the Lalibela Museum, and end the day with a sunset hike over the mountains.

We are so thrilled with our experience visiting Lalibela for two nights with Tewabe as our guide! Tewabe and his brother Lule helped us feel very comfortable and cared for the entire time. On our morning Tewabe met us at the airport with a van and after a beautiful drive to Lalibela, we checked into our accommodation which we had chosen to book independently. Next we went to the market with Tewabe which was especially large and interesting to see on a Saturday. Tewabe showed us different areas and explained some of the products without ever pressuring us to purchase anything. Next he took us to his home where we met his friendly sister and they showed us how to cook injera, shiro and we even roasted coffee beans before enjoying coffee and lunch together. Lule then guided us for our visit to the half of the churches, explaining the symbolism and significance of everything we saw. He is very knowledgable and passionate while also being patient and calmly answering our questions. On Sunday morning Lule and Tewabe took us to morning mass and again considered details to make us feel comfortable such as lending us Ethiopian cloth wraps to wear. Lule took us into the church to see the priests chanting which was an incredibly special experience. After visiting the other half of the churches that day, Lule invited us to his home for food and drink where they were having a special holiday celebration with family and friends. They kindly adapted any activities to our wishes, including when we were tired on the second afternoon and wanted to rest at our accommodation. On our final morning, we took a beautiful short hike with Tewabe before returning to the airport. We are so grateful and will never forget our experience and new friendships! We happily recommend Tewabe and his team!

I am very grateful for running into to Tewabe and booking this tour with him. from the moment I landed at the airport, he greeted me with a sign with my name, and had a very personable outlook. He was able to answer all my questions and make sure I stayed in one of the nicest accommodation here in Lalibella. Despite being one of the few tourists at the time I was visiting I did not fear at all my stay or my visit because he ensured all my safety and well-being. What added to the experience was the team he works with; Lule the other guide, another very personable and cheerful person was very patient answering all my questions and taking the zillion pictures I asked for and the driver Mario; all make a lovely team. I would not hesitate to recommend to Tewabe and his team for an amazing experience at lalibella

I had such an amazing experience with Tewabe in Lalibela. From the moment I arrived, he was incredibly welcoming, kind, and attentive. He made sure I felt comfortable at all times and truly went out of his way to make my stay special. He showed me the incredible rock-hewn churches, took me to some beautiful hidden spots around Lalibela, and shared so much about the local culture and history. In the evening, he even brought me to a traditional local bar, which made the experience even more authentic and fun. What I really appreciated is how genuine and caring he is. He didn’t just show me around — he made me feel like a friend rather than a visitor. Thanks to him, I had one of the best local experiences I could have hoped for. I highly recommend Tewabe to anyone visiting Lalibela. He will make your stay truly unforgettable 😊

It was my first visit to Ethiopia and I enjoyed it very much. The trip was 20 days long. A first we travelled in a small group to the far south among original tribes and then we moved to the north. We visited some churches of Ethiopan Ortodox Church near Tana lake, in Gondar, Simien mountains and finally went to the marvelous holy city of Lalibela. We admired beautiful paintings on the walls of churches which express great spiritual depth and symbolic meaning in gestures of biblical persons. It is a perfect mean of teaching of the biblical events and also the history of the Ethiopian Ortodox Church and its saints. It’s incredible how well preserved and maintained thes paintings are. When visiting Lalibela’s amazing and unique rock-hewn churches I met Tewabe who provided me with kind help and welcome. He generously gave me information about the holy city and detailed explanation. I really appreaciate his friendly and warm approach which did not end with my departure from Ethiopia but continues. Thanks to his photos and videos I am brought even closer to the atmosphere of important religious events and the way they are experienced by local Christians. Thank you Tewabe and hope to return to Lalibela one day again! Ivana

Tewabe was the most hospitable and attentive local tour guide we could have asked for in Lalibela. He truly went above and beyond to make sure my friends and I were well cared for and comfortable throughout our stay. He organised unforgettable local experiences, including welcoming us into his home to learn how to make injera and doro wat, and hosting a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. He also took us to a local bar to see traditional dancing and arranged visits to a restaurant with breathtaking scenic views. Tewabe organised an extremely knowledgeable guide for the rock-hewn churches and ensured we could safely navigate the large crowds during the Christmas celebrations at the church, which was an incredible and once-in-a-lifetime experience. His kindness, professionalism, and deep local knowledge made our trip truly special. I cannot recommend Tewabe highly enough to anyone visiting Lalibela.

I met Tewabe by chance in Lalibela while waiting for friends to visit the churches, and it was my luckiest encounter. With him, I discovered so much more than just the churches, which are already breathtakingly beautiful. I have never put anyone so kind, attentive, friendly, and passionate about his city. He has such a desire to share his knowledge, to show off the city and its surroundings, the local cuisine, and the beauty of the mountains around the city. These were truly wonderful moments we shared, and I felt like I was with a long-time friend! You must visit Lalibela and its wonders, and especially do it with Tewabe for a truly unique experience. I have rarely been so charmed by a place, and Tewabe and his sister are largely responsible for that. I spent three days in the city, which allowed me to visit all 11 churches, attend a religious ceremony, explore the city with Tewabe, discover different neighborhoods while shopping, meet his family and learn how to cook injera, experience a coffee ceremony, take a wonderful hike in the mountains overlooking the city and discover village life, and admire truly exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. Most importantly, I spent long hours chatting and laughing with Tewabe and his sister, Lasta. He took such good care of me, and I don't know how to thank him enough. Come to Lalibela; it's the best time to visit because the city isn't overrun with tourists, and you'll have a unique and authentic experience in this place steeped in history, surrounded by truly magnificent panoramas, where you'll meet incredibly kind people. I wish all travelers who come to Lalibela the chance to visit it with Tewabe. Thank you, Tewabe, for everything, and I hope to return to Lalibela one day with my family to show them all its wonders. Fantastic. My advise to all of you who hesitate about the price... IT IS REAL. But that's not the important thing about the tour. IF YOU ARE A SOLO TRAVELER, If you love to mingle with local people, have a hint about their culture and know them better, Tewabe is your guide!! This is not the regular tour that takes you on a van from the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the churches and from the churches to the airport, this is about knowing and sharing with the people. The first day Tewabe was waiting for me with a big signal when I arrived in the morning, we went for a short walk in the city, entered some houses and saw the flour grinding process to make Injera. Then Tewabe was super kind and opened his home doors to me, we had a lovely coffee ceremony and a lunch with his sister, who taught me some words in Aramaic and taught me to cook injera. In the afternoon Tewabe left me with Lul my second guide who showed me 6 churches, he was amazing we walked through the churches at a very slow pace (no rushing), super friendly, patient and open to answer all my question. When we finished at the churches Tewabe was waiting for us and took me to a short hiking to a panoramic view (360° around lalibela) we saw the sunset there and it was amazing, contemplating the beautiful of Amara's landscape. Then we went to have dinner and finished our day drinking a honey wine at a local. The second day I was again with lul visiting the remaining 5 churches, after that Tewabe took me to the merkato and the souvenir shops to finally drop me at the airport. Amaizing, I was hesitating to go, but I do not regret at all, Tewabe is super flexible and very open to welcome you as his friend and not his customer. Please DO IT!!

To me, Tewabe is a live expression of Lalibela, his tenderness, knowledge and permanent smile made my solo experience in the holy city something to be remembered always. With him, I experienced both the Lalibela highlights as well as the off the beaten-path. I had coffee three times in a day, had profound unerstanding of the local society and felt with him as a long-life close friend. He introduced me to his family, his friends and his spouse, and had also fun times at the barbecue stalls (it was a religious holiday). I recommend Tewabe's tours and friendship with all my heart and soul! I keep in touch with him on a monthly basis
