What To Expect

Day 1

Transfer to Akagera national park from Kigali

Kigali

Today, after your relaxed morning breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked by our safari guide and leave for Akagera national park, the journey to Akagera national park takes about 2.5 hours depending on the stopovers along the way, with the beautiful un winding landscape en route to the park, feel free to ask the guide for stopovers to capture some photos. On arrival at the park, we shall proceed to our accommodation after a short game drive and check in for lunch. We order lunch and later head for a boat trip on Lake Ihema watch Hippos and crocodiles in the water or by the shores and meet the buffaloes and elephants wallowing by the water banks. Later return to the lodge for dinner and evening stay.

From Kigali, mid-way: Stop-over by Imigongo Art Center and cafe for leg stretching, viewing Imigongo arts, using the washrooms. You may also opt to buy a cup of coffee or anything else there.

Akagera National Park

Reaching Akagera by 12h30, proceed with registration and Covid-19 formalities. Head to Akagera Mantis Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge for lunch and check-in before diving through the park to Ihema lake, the largest lake in the park and the second largest in Rwanda. Enjoy the one-hour boat ride exploring the nature in the forest.

Day 2

Game drive and Transfer back to Kigali.

Akagera Live Tour

After an early morning breakfast at 7:30 am and leave for a early morning game drive in Akagera national park to catch up with late hunters and early risers. We will be searching for the big mammals like Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, several Antelope species, and recently the re-introduced Lions and Rhinos. The park is a varied habitat for wildlife and a number bird species with over 500 bird species in the park making it a birding paradise. Meal Plan Breakfast- lunch. You will leave the lodge with parked lunch for the game drive which will last about 6 hours depending on your interests before starting the journey back to Kigali. You will take the route along the lake which more often has a variety of animals to site along. You will later be dropped at the lodge/hotel/home or airport to catch up with your evening flight.

Last week I had an unforgettable 2-day trip with the owner of Tugende Tours Ltd to Akagera National Park. We saw all the Big Five, with incredible close-up sightings that left us speechless! What made the experience truly unique was the warm energy and storytelling from our guide—he brought the landscape and wildlife to life. After the safari, we visited his club in Kigali—Silent Home Pickleball Club—and yes, we played pickleball under the Rwandan sky! It’s the first time I’ve ever mixed sport with safari, and I loved every moment of it. Tugende Tours combines adventure with creativity in a way that feels personal and purposeful. Highly recommend for anyone who wants more than just sightseeing—this is travel with soul.

We had a great experience in Akagera and Vulcano area! We recommend taking a couple of days for each area if you are leaving from Kigali because it takes up to 3 hours to reach either the Vulcano park or akagera.

Universal ventures handled our educational tour for our school group. It was the most wonderful outing having come from another country. They handled the Airport pick and drop off with their clean coaster bus, provided good meals for all the days during the tours. We had the city tour, Akagera park and also a vist to the Volkswagen plant and Fazenda Sengha Rwanda. The tour guide was wonderful and had knowledge of the city. Mr Emmanuel the manager was very helpful in making the trip so memorable. Mr Emmanuel is always available to answer your questions. I highly recommend them and will use them over again.

It has been a very fun and exciting adventure. Christian has been our driver and guide. Christian knows the park very well, he has been very polite and attentive to us at all times.

Our trip was amazing because of the tailored advice of Emmanuel. Our guide/driver Justin was very knowledgeable and very helpful. The car was in excellent condition. The communication was immediate and clear. I contacted Emmanuel on a Sunday to arrange a trip for the next day and he was able to arrange it. Emmanuel is a very reliable guy who goes beyond what you ask for example I lost something and he found it and got it delivered it to me. I can more than recommend his services, I have experienced other similar service that cost much more but weren't as smooth as with him.
