Danakil Depression is one of the most extreme and otherworldly places on Earth. Located in the Afar region of Ethiopia, it is the lowest point on the continent and is home to a variety of geological wonders, including active volcanoes, salt lakes, and lava fields.
Besides, tours to the Danakil desert are not for the faint of heart. The conditions in the depression are extreme, with temperatures regularly reaching over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and the air being thick with dust and smoke. Visitors must be prepared for long journeys in 4×4 vehicles, camping in basic accommodations, and dealing with the harsh desert.

I recently spent one week in Ethiopia, combining a business trip in Addis Ababa (Montanuniversität Leoben / Addis Ababa University collaboration) with a private excursion, and the entire experience was organized by this outstanding local travel agency. I can highly recommend their services. 🌍✈️ From the very beginning, the team supported us with everything: organizing seminar logistics, finding suitable locations, arranging transportation, and accommodating individual needs of multiple participants. Even with a larger group, everything ran smoothly and professionally. Communication was clear, respectful, and efficient, and the agency demonstrated great flexibility throughout the planning process. 👏 After the business trip, they organized several optional excursions. I personally joined a weekend trip to the Danakil Depression, and it was an unforgettable experience. The agency handled all details — flights, transfers, accommodation, meals, and local logistics — so we could fully focus on enjoying the trip. 🏜️ Our driver and guides were extremely professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. They ensured that everyone felt safe and comfortable at all times. The mix of local and Western food was excellent, and all arrangements — from breakfast to overnight stays — were thoughtfully organized. Even in remote areas, everything worked perfectly. What impressed me most was the smooth coordination behind the scenes. The team clearly has extensive experience handling both academic/business groups and individual travelers. Their respect for local culture, attention to detail, and ability to manage complex itineraries made the trip stress-free and enjoyable. 🤝 If you are planning a trip to Ethiopia — whether for business, academic collaboration, or tourism — I can strongly recommend this agency. They provide professional service, reliable organization, and truly memorable experiences. Highly recommended!

The tour couldn't have been better. A great adventure with many highlights and even a salty pool session in the desert. The guide and company owner Asho and his team mates provided all the support needed, and more. Always in for a good laugh or an interesting story - excellent. Thanks for everything!

Even though it involves a lot of travel time, the destinations are totally worth the visit and the trip is perfectly organized. The staff had a great energy and we made some experiences you don’t get elsewhere - Erta Ale and Dallol are unique places. Thank you all!

The experience was wonderful! I got picked up at the airport and they were already waiting for us. Our tour was a mix of solo travelers and locals who are also touring. It was quite a long drive to Erta Ale stopping by for some views, breakfast, and lunch. Be prepared for flies and make sure you bring some insect repellent spray / lotion. Arrived at our camp site and hiked a little for Erta Ale. Unfortunately we didn't see the lava lake as it was ashy, and the guide mentioned that a section of the place collapsed. However the volcano was still amazing especially in the morning. Day 2, we went back up to see the sunrise at Erta Ale, then went further north to Dallol and the salt flats. We stopped by at a local village to get some bunna (traditional Ethiopian coffee). Watched the sunset at the salt flats and drove to our campsite. In the morning, we went back to the salt flats for sunrise and went to Dallol. Drove to Mekelle where the tour ended. Overall, the experience was amazing. For some folks this might be helpful: (1) Bring lots of wipes. The tour operator already mentioned to bring wipes, but it's helpful to know you'll need lots of them. (2) We didn't have shower areas (might not be a no-brainer for others but I somehow thought there would be one). (3) also make sure to bring towels My only feedback is on day one when we didn't get fully clear instructions (e.g. during breakfast we stopped by but didn't get instructions on what we're doing there. thankfully we were on tour together with two locals who told us that we were going to get breakfast, but we also didn't get instruction where we're gonna sit, what we're gonna order, etc).

What a wonderful experience in Ethiopia! My trip to the Danakil Depression was honestly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Seeing the volcanic ash up close was incredible. The price was reasonable, the services were great, and the whole team was super helpful. We spent three days in Danakil — it’s extremely hot, very remote, and everything is very basic out there. No showers, no lodges, and not many people around, which actually made it feel even more adventurous. Dallol was the most colorful place I’ve ever seen, definitely one of the best spots in Ethiopia. Huge thanks to Ashu for arranging everything so smoothly!

What a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Danakil Depression and volcano! Ashu is an amazing operator, he kept in touch with me every day, and everything was perfectly organized. The whole team was professional, friendly, and always ready to help. Wonde was a great driver, Memher an incredible guide, and our cook made delicious meals throughout the trip. Everyone worked together seamlessly to make this adventure truly special. The Danakil Depression itself is absolutely insane—otherworldly landscapes, vibrant colors, and unforgettable sights. I highly recommend this company to anyone who wants to explore this incredible part of Ethiopia. Huge thanks to Ashu and the whole team for making this journey so memorable!
