Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park
The Navajo culture has thrived on the land between the Four Scared Mountains, and those teachings have been inherited through generations of verbal and lesson teaching methods. Some of these teachings are shared with you during the Cultural Tour by your Navajo guide. The Cultural, 3.5 hour tour makes a first stop at the famous John Ford’s Point where many of John Wayne’s western cinematic movies were filmed. Next, your guide will drive to The Backcountry of the park and escort you to the “Sun’s Eye Arch" and Hogan Demonstration. At “Sun’s Eye Arch” you will be standing at a specific degree to look up into the rock arch and see why it is named Sun’s Eye. At the same location you will also see Petroglyphs and hear your guide’s stories. Next, you will travel to the “Big Hogan.” The Big Hogan is a great place to take family pictures and lie against the rocks and feel its warmth. Your guide will provide stories and suggest great photo shots. The last stop in the Backcountry is the “Ear of the Wind.” This is the largest arch in the park, and your guide will escort you to a photogenic spot where you can take photographs. Next, you will be guided to the Totem Pole and Yei Bi Cheii Monuments where you will be able to take photographs and hear the cultural stories behind each monument. The last stop is at the North Window where you will have a chance to take pictures of the Mittens and Butte at a different angle. Your tour guide will then slowly and safely transport you back to your departure point. Unfortunately, we cannot give much information about our guides’ stories because each guide has very uniquely different stories to tell. Our guides’ stories come from personal experience, lore, legends and the Navajo culture.

Absolutely wonderful! We loved our tour. Kids had a great time and we all learned so much. John was amazing as a guide. I think I learned more about the Navajo and their history during those three hours than I have ever before. If you’re going to Monument Valley, taking this tour is a must. We would have missed so much had we just driven ourselves.

The 3 1/2 hour cultural tour was excellent. Our guide, John, was very knowledgeable of the Monument Valley area, the people, the language and especially the history of the code walkers. We were able to visit areas not accessible by those choosing to do the drive on their own. We highly recommend this tour when visiting Monument valley. A must do.

Our guide John was great! Gave us so much information on the monuments and shared so much information regarding his Navajo culture. We had an unexpected private tour. A tour makes viewing Monument Valley more detailed because you can tour areas not available to people driving their vehicle. We also heard John play a wooden flute. Made the area feel magical.

Evonne was made our tour interesting and personable. She shared stories that Explained the Navajo culture and beliefs. Visiting the home of a local family was also a wonderful experience - with a demonstration of making yarn from sheep,s wool, and the meaning of designs woven into the blankets and wall hangings. It was a windy day that brought heavy gusts of dust, Evonne suggested we ride in her SUV which made the journey comfortable.

We went on the extended 3.5 hr tour with our very competent, informative, and entertaining guide Darren and experienced various aspects of the entire Park, including a visit in a Hogan and plenty of photo stops along the way. Our tour guide was very helpful in suggesting motifs and even taking pictures for and with us. This was a tour we will remember!

We did the 3.5 hour cultural tour which was excellent. Our guide Stephen was friendly and informative - we learned a lot about the Navajo culture and history. We were so glad we booked a tour - you get to see and learn so much more than just trying to drive the road yourself.

Monument Valley is full of incredible sights, but we were more interested in Navajo history and culture. We booked the 3.5 hour tour and from the start our guide Levander was telling us lots of stories. We learned about growing up on the reservation, what it's like to live a traditional Navajo life, myths, and so many other stories. If I were to describe the tour in one sentence, I'd say that Levander was a great storyteller and that his stories will stay with us forever. I can't recommend this tour highly enough.

I had the very good luck to end up solo on a 3.5 hour tour with Harry. The scenery was fabulous, of course. But Harry was just a generous and kind person; he shared a tremendous amount of information about the valley, its history, as well as his culture and history. He was an excellent guide, with endless tips about where and how to get the best photos. He knew all the shots and locations of films shot in various places. He told me about some of the plants and their uses. It was just a jam-packed morning of learning and scenery. I so enjoyed it!
