This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is one of the most popular and commonly referred to as the ‘whisky’ route due to its popularity and strong nature of the route. Machame starts at the southwest mountain rain forest and involves steep and challenging hikes on the southern circuit which is well designed for acclimatization with natural features taking you high and low. Although this is a non-technical route, there is a small ‘scrambling’ (using your hands and legs) section at the Barranco wall which truly gives you that mountain climbing feeling without any special equipment or experience.

You will be transferred by road from Moshi town/Pick up location (09:00am) to Machame gate. After registration you begin your trek through the rain forest zone with your guide. The forest is thick and diverse with flora / fauna, and you may experience rain this afternoon which is common in this zone making the path slightly slippery. A steady but relatively steep hike takes you to the edge of the forest and heather zone.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Today’s hike is a little shorter and begins with a trek through the heather & moorland zone up a steep ridge till the semi-circular cliff known as Picnic Rock. From here you have excellent views (on a clear day) of Kibo peak, the tallest cone on the mountain where your goal of Uhuru peak is. You should also see the jagged peaks of the Shira Plateau to the west. Shira is the third peak of Kilimanjaro which has been molded by lava flow, erosion, and volcanic activity. Tanzania’s second highest mountain (Mt Meru 4563m or 14970ft) may be seen in the distance. The remainder of your day is a much gentler / flat trail to your camp, where the views are equally as spectacular.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Your hike today takes you towards to Kibo cone steadily climbing up and over the edges of the alpine desert to your first high altitude at the lava tower (4630m or 15190ft). Today helps you to acclimatize and also is a great indicator to see how your body can handle the higher altitude. From the Lava Tower you begin your steep descent anti clockwise around Kibo and into the Barranco Valley passing the large flowering mountain cacti (Kilimanjaro Senecios) unique to Kilimanjaro. The day ends around the same elevation as you started on the edge of the heather and moorland.

This morning you will leave the camp and ascend the Barranco wall. This is an impressive non-technical scramble and gives a feeling of mountain climbing (without any previous experience or advanced equipment required) and is rewarded with a superb view from the top back into the camp and the Heim glacier on the peak. The remainder of the hike will be through the alpine desert slowly winding around the mountain till the Karanga valley which you descend into and again up till your camp. Karanga valley is the last water point.

Today you climb almost casually through the empty landscape of the alpine desert where you keep a slow pace even though the path is not extremely steep. Kibo cone starts to near and you may finally glimpse the Mawenzi peak (Kilimanjaro’s second peak) in the east. The short distance means you have plenty of time at your summit camp to rest and prepare for the summit attempt tonight.

Mount Kilimanjaro
In the early morning (around 00:00am) you begin your final ascent to the summit of Uhuru peak through the arctic zone. The trek is a steep hike over loose volcanic scree through the dark and cold night and takes a slow pace in a zig-zag pattern towards Stella point (5685m or 18650ft) which is your first stop on the Kibo crater rim. From here a short (but difficult) hike remains to take you to Uhuru Peak (5895m or 19341ft), the highest point in Africa. You usually don’t spend that long at the peak due to the extreme altitude and will descend back down to the base camp for your breakfast / brunch. After your gear is packed up you continue the descent through the alpine desert, heather and moorland and eventually stopping at Mweka camp in the rain forest zone for a well-deserved rest.

Your final day on Kilimanjaro is a descent through the southern rain forest until Mweka gate where our vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Moshi town/Drop off location. Amazing experience I have ever experience on the mountain. I met with Richard, my guide a day before the trip, who you can tell is a wonderful, amazing and considerate guy, could ask for more. Since I just finished my business meetings in Arusha and just arrived in Moshi, I needed some rest, and Richard immediately realized that. He did explain the most important details of the trek and inspected my gears real quick and gave me some time to recuperate before my big adventure. The next day, the entire team arrived at the lodge on time, ready for the trip of my life. Richard is so passion by his job and you can tell on how he explains the mountain, culture and the way of life in Tanzania, a true ambassador guide I can say. The overall trekking experience was amazing, the team and how they interacted with each other was wonderful. Richard as their leader, communicated with them smoothly and every was a 10 star experience. Sometimes leaders don't interact with their team members, but how Richard was helping in small matter and the happiness that was always around this team you could always see it around the kitchen tent, was amazing. The food was always there, I don't know why I didn't gain some weight especially to the fact that I was over fed at all times. The information from Richard was clearly and I did like the fact that he was direct and always tells me the truth no matter how hard the answer may be and that motivated me in some way. He clearly knows what he is doing and very good english compared to other guides from different companies, He is someone you can always talk to, and not worrying that he may not understand or have to rephrase it to make it easy for me, which was what other clients were experiencing most of the times and hard to repeat now and then. Couldn't ask for a better guide. I was thinking of skipping a camp on day 4 and head straight to the base camp, since I was feeling energetic, but Richard advised against it, and I was truly happy later on after getting to the base camp the next day and didn't manage to get some sleep, and the summit night was one of the very challenging things I have ever done. If I had forced and skip the camp, I am not sure if I could have made it to the summit, thanks Richard. After the summit, on the way down I decided I can go all the way out and fly the same day. Richard is really a hero, he managed to find a good connection now and then just for me to be able to change my flight, he managed to talked to the office last minute for them to organize everything and take me to the airport. Thanks to Shah tours for their prompt response and organization, I managed to fly out the same day without any problems at all. The whole Kilimanjaro team whom were comfortable and willing to carry all the luggages from the base camp to the gate are one among the amazing human beings I have ever met. So once again thank you Shah tours, Kilimanjaro team and most importantly to Richard for all he did to make sure I was safe throughout this trek. Best guide you will ever encounter and ask for him whenever you are hiking with Shah tours.

Beautiful trip. I didn't know the tour operator and I must say that I was very happy with the way the trekking was organized and not only. Shah Tour accompanied me from the moment I arrived at the airport to the moment I left. The trekking was exceptional, the Guides very prepared and very attentive both from a technical and organizational point of view. The porters all polite helpful and very courteous. The cook cooked for a week without us eating , never the same thing despite being in the mountains and having few resources available. The large tents comfortable and clean. I would recommend everyone to travel with Shah Tours.

We cannot recommend Shah tours enough! We did this 7-days hike as part of our honeymoon. They gave us the best experience in the mountain and did everything to help us get to the summit. They added little stops on different days and more than once other walkers said we were given the VIP treatment in the mountain. On summit day, I struggled with altitude and they were ready to help and even to descend - I learnt a new technique thanks to them. Also, the crew was genuinely pleased to see us doing so well on the walk and they always had a smile to share, which gave the campsite a motivating atmosphere - and they were better equipped than other porters. They were helpful even from before starting the hike, as I had a family emergency and had to move the trip at the very last minute. If you want a great experience going up Kilimanjaro, we highly recommend you to book with them without a doubt.

The trek to Uhuru peak via Machame Route was an unforgettable experience. The crew that accompanied us was extraordinarily great. Our mountain guides Noel and Richard were very empathetic and patient, answering all our questions, preparing us well by giving short briefings every night and motivating us especially throughout harder parts of the trek. They were super caring always asking for our wellbeing and checking on our health regularly (oxygen etc.). We felt very save at all times. They were clearly professional and experienced and their passion for both nature and the hiking/climbing itself was contagious. They put so much effort into planning the daily hikes and especially the summit night, considering our individual abilities and needs, making it a special and enjoyable experience for everyone. Thank you so much! Our chef David was very cordial and cooked 5-star meals in the little kitchen tent, taking into account personal dietary restrictions and preferences, providing surprisingly much fresh and healthy food. Joell served the food graciously and always made sure we had everything we needed and more. He was extraordinarily friendly and effortlessly created a very welcoming atmosphere and even communicated with us in our mother tongue (German). Also the other porters, Matthew, Ladislaus, Said, James, James, Geoffrey, Deus, Maiko and Pascal were super hardworking, helpful and always friendly and full of happiness, spreading so much joy and thereby contributing to the wonderful atmosphere in camp. Thank you to every single one of them! The communication with Shah Tours went very smoothly. They thoroughly answered all the questions that arouse beforehand and actively asked for feedback both written and personally afterwards. They were very open to both positive and negative critique, of which I had very little, my only advice being to revise the packing list provided in advance. All in all it was a unique and special adventure, that I enjoyed greatly. So many unforgettable memories were created throughout the 7 days of the trek. The amazing crew made every day almost as special and pleasant as the outstanding and impressive moment of reaching Uhuru peak. Asante sana!

I went with Shah Tours for my first ever solo adventure in which I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and it was easily an adventure of a lifetime! Not only did Shah Tours get me to the top, they made me not want to leave Tanzania at all! Our wonderful guides Calvin, Augustin, and Anania brought my summit group to the top, kept us feeling unstoppable and inspired all the way, and went out of their way to make us feel like family. I learned so much from them about the mountain and the local culture! It made the adventure incredibly immersive and worth every millisecond. Along with our guides, our wonderful crew made the experience a beautiful memory I swear never to forget! Every moment spent alongside them made me feel welcome not only to the mountain, but to being a member of the team. To put it simply: Wonderful guides, a lovely crew, fantastic food, and a hell of an adventure! Next time I am exploring Tanzania, I'm doing it with Shah Tours!

A bucket list trip ticked off with Shah Tours. We were taken care of from the moment we landed with transfers and accommodation at the beautiful Chanya lodge where we fuelled up and rested before and after our trek. We completed the Machame 7-day trek. The trek itself was incredible yet challenging and no doubt rewarding - the views on Mount Kilimanjaro were like no other and I will never forget the most beautiful sunrise we saw on our way to summit. We couldn't have done it without the amazing crew that supported us every step of the way and kept the vibes up even when things got tough. The guides were very knowledgeable, the porters showed remarkable strength and our chef Kelvin was super! Being vegetarian we were nervous about what we would eat but we were blown away at every meal. Thank you Shah Tours!

Kimberly D. I had a breathtaking Kilimanjaro climb with Shah Tours’ Machame route. The Shah team did an amazing job taking care of our group. They were very organized and made safety a priority at all times. Our guides Calvin Shayo and Anania always explained what to expect and cheered us on the whole way. My porter Martin stuck by me like glue in case I ever needed anything. Our cook and server, Emanuel, made sure we were well fed and accommodated our group’s dietary restrictions. Wilbert in the office helped me with paper work after the climb and went beyond the call of duty. I had so much fun. I will never forget my beautiful and challenging Kilimanjaro adventure!
