The Machame route, also known as the Whisky Route is one of the most scenic and recommended routes on Kilimanjaro. This popular route with paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice fields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. Because it can be done over longer periods and the incline is more manageable it has a much higher success rate of summit.

Today you will climb approximately 700 m, but you will spend the night at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. This will allow your body to acclimatize, as a height of over 4,600 m will be reached before descending again. In doing so, you will be able to see how your body reacts to such an altitude. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower. The vegetation becomes sparser as the landscape changes to alpine desert. The climb passes through the wide Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours’ walking, you will arrive at the Barranco Camp – perhaps the most beautiful camp in Kilimanjaro.

After reaching the top of Barranco Wall, you will walk along the mountain ridge. From here you will have fantastic views of the southern glacier of Kibo as well as of the Kibo summit. We just returned from 7 days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route. Meru Slopes team is the best. Guide Julius, assistrnt guide John were always very helpful and very knowledgeable about local flora, fauna, geography and history. Our chef Jacob cooked delicious food from Fresh ingredients. Our waiter Hamidu brought us food and drinks into our tent with always cheerful mood. All the porters worked perfectly as well. We appreciated the option to accomodate in a closer camp ground than planned when I was too tired after the summit hike. Manager Jerome was very helpful arranging transfers and hotels prior and after the trek. Even organized a bus ride to Nairobi Which was originally not part of our package. We highly recommend Meru Slopes to all travellers :) Katerina and Pavel from Prague

My adult son and I had 2 very different but amazing experiences with the crew from MeruSlopes. We booked a climb of Kilimanjaro immediately followed by 6 days of safari so I’m providing a separate review for each. On Kilimanjaro, we had a team of 11 supporting us led by Paul who was excellent as the main guide and Ibrahim as assistant guide. I unfortunately got altitude sickness (largely due to lack of fitness) and Ibrahim was very helpful walking me off the mountain and escorting me back to Arusha. Paul helped my son get to the summit and was very accommodating and professional in adjusting the plans midway to match my son’s better fitness. We also had Joshua as chef and Francis who served us awesome meals every day. All the porters were tremendous carrying up a multitude of equipment and food. The Meru crew showed great service and professionalism in both my son summiting but also in assisting me exit early. An awesome experience!

I don’t often leave reviews, but I really felt like this experience and the people who made it so amazing deserve the time to be given recognition. I booked a 7-day Mt Kilimanjaro hike with Meru Slopes Tours & Safaris after having read positive reviews about the company. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. My guide for the trek was Hussein. Him and his team of porters and the chef made my trek an unforgettable one. Hussein was extremely knowledgeable about the mountain and took time to explain the geology, the history, and the different ecosystems. He has 20+ years of experience, so his knowledge is vast. The chef, Hashim, made such excellent meals each day, I was actually blown away by the quality considering we were camping. And the entire group of porters were so kind, caring, funny, and attentive. They really made me feel like I was part of the family, and it made my trek that much more enjoyable. I will definitely do this trek again in the future, and when I do, I’ll be requesting the exact same guide (Hussein), chef (Hashim), and team of porters. Also, make sure to tip your teams the full recommended amount, if not more. It may seem like a lot on top of what you’re already paying for the trip, but after seeing the amount of effort that goes into making the experience so great, you quickly realize the tipping amount is nothing compared to the work they put into it. I also need to mention that Almachius, the Meru Slopes liaison who has helped me book my trip, has been so communicative and attentive throughout my entire trip. He is so quick to respond to questions and/or requests. Not only that, but even throughout the trip he has been keeping up with the same responsiveness. Many companies will go silent after they take your money, but not Meru Slopes. I’ve been taken care of throughout my entire journey. The last thing I’ll say is that Meru Slopes is a local company to Tanzania, so booking with them means that the money directly goes back to the community and to the people, so that’s another great reason why you should book with them. Being local, they know the best places to take you and have the best resources on hand. They have better prices than the internationally run companies, and they give you a more intimate and family-like experience. I am looking forward to the 7-day safari with Meru Slopes coming up. If it’s anything like the My Kilimanjaro trek, then I know I’ll be leaving happy and like the experience was worth every dollar!

----------------------------------------- I would like to thank you very much for organizing the climb to Kilimanjaro. When ordering the climb, communication with Meruslopes with Mr. Jerome Hotti was completely seamless. The team assigned to us with the main guide Hussein was excellent. Hussein is a wise man with many years of experience, supervised his team to make sure that everything was as it should be. Everyone was very friendly and tried to do their best to help us successfully climb to the top of Uhuru Peak. All of us from our 4-member group could do it without major health problems, also thanks to good acclimatization, which was due to the correctly chosen walking pace and the correct recommended route. I must also praise the food that the chef prepared for us during the climb, because the food was excellent and there was always plenty of it. I definitely recommend Meruslopes.

We’ve just returned from our Kilimanjaro trek and had a truly wonderful experience. We felt so supported and well cared for by our incredible team throughout the journey. They even managed to make camping feel luxurious! Huge thanks to our amazing team: • Guides Hussein and Charles, who supported us all the way to Uhuru—even when we doubted ourselves. • Chef Moody, who kept us fuelled with delicious meals. • Our lovely waiter, Hashim, whose warm presence really brightened the experience. • And our incredible team of porters, who were so helpful and friendly and for teaching us how to play a new card game :) We booked both Kilimanjaro and our Serengeti safari through Jerome, who was very helpful and responsive to questions. Asante sana Meru Slopes

It was a fantastic experience. Yona and Kennedy are knowledgeable and extraordinary guides, available to help and take care of us, always in a good mood and with a contagious positive attitude. The entire team felt like a family, extremely friendly and hard-working. Machaka’s cooking kept our energy levels up, always eager to know which delights he would prepare each day.

This trip was an incredible, once in a lifetime adventure that I’ll never forget. Hussein and the team were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and they looked after me like their Dada (sister). The trip was well organised and very reasonable in cost. I would highly recommend Meru Slopes to organise any Kilimanjaro trekking. I’ll come back one day to do Mount Meru with them. It’s worth checking with Meru Slopes before departure how many people are on the tour with you. I ended up being the only one which I thought was amazing, but I know some people might find this a bit isolating. So it’s definitely worth checking before arrival.
