Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast Buddhist cave monastery carved into a massive granite rock in central Sri Lanka, and it’s one of the country’s most spiritually and historically significant sites. Historical background The origins of the temple go back over 2,000 years, with early evidence of cave dwellings used by Buddhist monks as far back as the 1st century BCE. A major turning point came with King Valagamba (Vattagamani Abhaya), who, after being exiled from his kingdom in Anuradhapura, took refuge in these caves. When he later regained the throne, he is believed to have commissioned the transformation of the caves into a grand temple complex as an act of gratitude. Over the centuries, successive kings expanded and restored the site, turning it into a continuously evolving sacred space rather than a single-era monument

While elephants are the main attraction—sometimes seen in herds of over 100–300 animals—it is also home to deer, monkeys, crocodiles, water birds, and many species of reptiles. The most famous event here is “The Gathering”, considered one of the largest wild elephant congregations in the world, where elephants move to the reservoir to drink, bathe, and graze when water becomes scarce elsewhere. Going on a private tour is by far the best way my wife and I have explored a country. We booked the standard package and stayed in lovely hotels organised by Ceylon Classic Tours and travelled in a comfortable and spacious car with air conditioning. Our driver and guide Dimu takes great care of you and goes out of his way to ensure you are getting the most out of your trip every day. 10/10! We would highly recommend Ceylon Classic Tours when travelling to Sri Lanka and make sure you request Dimu!

W e booked the 9 day tour after seeing great reviews on trip advisor and we are so glad we did! This was the best way to travel around Sri Lanka and see the most out of our time here. I was initially a bit nervous as we hadn’t had a lot of communication prior to starting the trip but I didn’t need to worry because everything was seamlessly planned. Our driver Dimu was excellent! He showed us the best sites to see in Sri Lanka and was happy to change plans as requested. We were picked up in a comfortable, air conditioned private car and stayed in very nice hotels (we picked the 4 star standard option and were impressed by the standard of most of them). The buffet dinners and breakfasts were great and included in the price. Just note the activities and entrance fees are relatively steep over here for what you get and I was not expecting this (around $50usd pp for most attractions and you do at least 1-2 each day plus tips on top). However, the cost of the tour package was very well priced so it balances out. Our favourite spots were Sigirya Rock, Cave temple and the national park safaris (amazing experience). Overall, we have had such a great trip and feel like we have seen a lot of the highlights of Sri Lanka in a short time. I would absolutely recommend booking a tour through Sri Lanka through Ceylon Classic Tours, we shall definitely be back!

We just wanted to give a big thank you to Lishan and Ceylon Classic Tours for making our trip to Sri Lanka truly unforgettable. The culture and scenery were absolutely breathtaking, and Supun, our guide, made our honeymoon so special. He was always polite, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects. We only wish we had more time to explore Sri Lanka. Hopefully, we'll be able to return soon, with Supun once again leading the way. The staff at Ceylon Classic Tours were also incredibly helpful in planning our perfect trip. 😍😃

  • Unforgettable trip!

Wow, what an incredible tour! My companions and I booked an 8-day trip to Sri Lanka with hopes of experiencing the culture, witnessing the stunning beauty of the country, and spotting some native wildlife. We were not disappointed! Despite having limited time, we were able to enjoy a multitude of activities, from jeep safaris where we spotted leopards, bears, and the iconic elephant, to climbing the breathtaking Sigiriya Rock and taking in the stunning views on the train ride to the charming town of Ella. We made unforgettable memories, such as spotting whales off the coast of Mirissa and releasing baby turtles into the ocean on the beaches of Bentota. None of this would have been possible without our amazing guide, Kasun. He added so much to our time in Sri Lanka by sharing his extensive knowledge of the culture, history, and wildlife, and somehow managing to get us front-row seats and queue jumps wherever we wanted. Kasun went above and beyond with his positive and friendly manner, and I can honestly say he felt like part of the family (I even cried when we parted ways). Thank you so much, Kasun, Ceylon Classic Tours, and our tour organizer, Lishan, for making our trip so perfect! ❤️🙏

So impressed with Lishan organizational skills. When we thought we had had our prescribed schedule, he was suggesting more. Thank you, Ceylon classic Tours for your genuine eagerness to please customers! We were certainly pleased with the itinerary, staff and organization. Our first four days were with the driver kasun who was resourceful, polite and very helpful (which included procuring various things (or use of things) that we had forgotten to bring with us for our trip!). We would recommend following Kasun advice and getting proper site guides for the visits to the ancient sites of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa which were brought to life. We enjoyed a well-organized trip which included history, temples, safaris, wonderful scenery (train through the mountainous area) and very tasty food. The Ceylon classic Tours eight day Classic Tour gave us a wonderful, colorful first experience of Sri Lanka with every day an adventure. Thanks to Ceylon classic tour, NO 01 budget tour operator in Sri Lanka.
