• Ruakuri cave is well worth it!!

  This cave was recommended by a local who had grown up around the area. And it did not disappoint. The Guide (Garth) was friendly and informative - he himself grew up in and around the caves so it was great to have someone guiding us who has such a connection. The spiral walk down is impressive, the whole walk is very easy and the sights and stories are fantastic - highly recommend :)

  The cave itself, with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, completely accessible for walking easily or wheelchairs, well lit, and fascinating, is arguably the main attraction as opposed to the glow worms. You'll definitely see glow worms, and the filaments they hang down to catch food (not that there is any, so they basically resort to cannabilism to survive), but they are a minor part of the tour. Regardless, this is a stunning cave and highly recommended. The tour guides are terrific as well. (If you use a wheelchair, you can stay in the car while someone else in your party checks in (there is an accessible restroom in the check-in stattion as well as restrooms around back for everyone else), and then you can drive down to within 50 feet (17 meters) or so of the cave entrance so you avoid the short downhill walk/roll to the cave. Note that the spiral path in the cave you'll see in the pictures is completley accessible but a bit difficult to get back up with push chairs.   Great cave tour. We saw lots o glow worms, as well as beautiful limestone formations Our guide. Garth was great, giving us lots of information about caves, the glow worms and the history of the area. This tour was a lot more expensive than the tour at the Main cave, but it was sold out …. This was a great option to the experience the Waitomo caves.

  Our guide was not very enthusiastic and did not talk much. The offer to download a free audio tour app, I regret not doing it. The cave has many numbered points of interests for the app, but our guide was usually silent, as we walked past them. At the final ascent the lights went dark, and everyone had to use their phones to light up the path to get out of the cave. The cave was beautiful, and we did see many worms, some of them very close.

  Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Our guide was excellent and we had plenty of time to look around as the tour was not rushed.

  We are very glad we chose this tour. Our guide was so informative about the caves origins and the glow worms. We got to see them quite close up. The cave itself was interesting and an easy walk. The 90 mins went so quick. We have previously taken the glow worms boat trip but definitely prefer the cave tour.
