Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is the first and only ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket where elephants roam around, bathe and sozialize freely across 30 acres of lush, tropical land bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park in North East Phuket. We buy all rescued elephants to ensure that Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is their final home, and we offer professional veterinary care for old and injured elephants. By visiting us, you are supporting a sustainable, ethical and compassionate approach to elephant tourism where elephants have the freedom to live naturally. National Geographic, Lonely Planet and The Guardian have all endorsed our ethical approach.

I made the mistake of going to a take sanctuary before I discovered this place. Other tourists and I realized something was wrong when we saw elephants chained hidden in the back of jungle. In this experience, we start with a lunch where we are shown the reality of what elephants go through on Thailand and the elephants that the sanctuary saves. Most of the elephants were so abused that they are nearly blind. We are not allowed to touch the elephants like in fake sanctuaries but we are allowed to feed them in a controlled environment and watch them from afar. You get to learn about the relationships that the rescued elephants have with one another and it's just a beautiful experience.

What a brilliant trip, the sanctuary is amazing for the elephants, loved feeding them, and trekking with them in their territory. The lunch was delicious, all staff especially Dennis were lovely and polite. Definitely recommend this trip.

  • A truly ethical experience.

This was one of the highlights of our holiday! We began with a lovely buffet breakfast which was completely unexpected! The building is beautiful with views over the sanctuary and everything was spotless!! The elephants have all been rescued and you will hear the story of each one. The relationship between each elephant and its ‘mahout’ is mesmerising. Overall a fantastic day!!

  • Decent experience but lasts FAR too long

Am I glad I did it, yes. Would I do it again, no. This tour is scheduled for 4 hours. Realistically, it could be 1. The video telling the story of the santuary is impactful and I had high hopes. Feeding the elephants was fun. After that you venture into the santuary with the elephants. While this is really amazing, that can only last so long. Looking at different elephants for 90-120 minutes gets pretty dull. On top of it, the guide just didn't seem to enjoy being a guide. I would have loved it at 1 hour but by hour 3, I wanted to just leave. One final note, as a westerner, I hated taking a tuk tuk from the office to the santuary. Riding in the bed of a truck on a highway with no seatbelts isn't my idea of a good time.
