Volcan De Acatenango Y Volcan De Pacaya
During the hike, we encounter four ecosystems with unique features. First, we see lush agricultural fields where farmers grow various crops, including corn and snow peas. Then, we enter a tropical cloud forest, teeming with diverse flora and fauna, providing shade and comfort for the steep ascent. Exiting the cloud forest, we enter a high-alpine forest offering stunning views of six volcanoes, where we enjoy a trail lunch. Afterward, we reach a wind-swept volcanic terrain where we camp at 12,300 ft / 3,750 m. Here, we enjoy dinner, coffee, and tea around the campfire with breathtaking views of Antigua Valley and Volcan Fuego, an unforgettable experience of watching volcanic eruptions and gazing at the star-filled sky.

Acatenango
After fueling up with an early morning breakfast, hikers embark on a 1-hour ascent to the summit of Acatenango. The climb may be steep, but the breathtaking views of Volcan Fuego, the Antigua Valley, and the Guatemalan highlands stretching all the way to Mexico make it all worthwhile. At the summit, guests will have a full 360-degree panoramic view to take in. After spending approximately an hour at the top (depending on weather and timing), we begin the three-hour descent back down the volcano, arriving at La Soledad and our waiting transportation by mid-day. Groups usually return to Antigua by early afternoon (~1:00 pm) with plenty of time to enjoy a celebratory beer, cappuccino, or a well-deserved siesta. Congratulations on conquering the volcano!

This hike was one of the most physically challenging things I’ve ever done — and also one of the most rewarding. The Acatenango + Fuego trek is no joke, but Trek Guatemala made it an incredible experience from start to finish. Our guide, Brolo, truly made the trip. His positive energy and encouragement carried us through the tough moments. He was knowledgeable, patient, and constantly checking in on everyone, which made us feel safe, supported, and well-prepared for such a strenuous adventure. Even when we were exhausted and feeling the effects of the altitude, Brolo kept morale high and made the experience genuinely fun. We felt properly equipped and informed throughout. The views from base camp and from Fuego were unreal — easily a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can’t imagine doing this hike without a guide like Brolo leading the way. If you’re considering hiking Acatenango / Fuego, Trek Guatemala is a great choice and if you can, ask for Brolo. You’ll be in excellent hands.

My husband and I traveled from the United States to Guatemala this past weekend and booked the Acatenango hike with Trek Guatemala- and it was truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of our lives. From start to finish, DAVID AND CHRIS were exceptional. Hiking Acatenango is physically demanding, and we were honestly nervous going into it, but they made us feel safe, prepared, and completely supported the entire way. They set a steady, manageable pace, checked in on everyone frequently, and were incredibly encouraging without ever making anyone feel rushed or pressured. Their knowledge of the mountain, the terrain, and the surrounding volcanoes added so much depth to the experience. They explained what we were seeing, shared insights about Fuego’s eruptions, and made sure we were positioned for the most breathtaking views. Watching Volcán de Fuego erupt from base camp was surreal- and David and Chris made sure we were warm, comfortable, and in the best possible spot to take it all in. Beyond their professionalism, they were genuinely kind, patient, and fun to be around. They created such a positive group dynamic and made what could have been an intimidating challenge feel empowering and even joyful. If you’re considering hiking Acatenango, book with Trek Guatemala and ask for DAVID AND CHRIS. You will be in the best hands. We are so grateful for this experience and will be talking about it for years to come. Highly, highly recommend!

Had the best time! Our guide Chris was amazing and dealt with a tough group. Two of the six showed up late and made everyone wait, skipped orientation, essentially came completely unprepared for the altitude, no sunscreen, etc (could go on and on). However, our guide expertly managed the situation keeping them safe and ensuring the rest of us had a blast. Food was great, views amazing, sleeping situation solid for a volcano. Come prepared, and you will have a great time!

I had an exceptional time with incredible views. A group of of eight of us hiked and camped with Rolo & Andres. They were exceptional guides! Three of us did the Fuego add-on hike with Rolo, which was amazing. Summited Achentenango in the morning with Andres for sunrise. Overall just an incredible journey. Physically demanding, but worth the payoff!

My daughter said “Hey mom What’ca doing mid January?” I said” What’ca got planned?” Wow 🤩 so awesome! Every thing is all planned out for you. All you have to do is show up! The guides were amazing, incredibly knowledgeable, down to earth and thoughtful. We did the extra days hike, which worked in favor for my daughter (who was sick the 2 weeks prior with no training I prayed 🙏🏻❤️✝️) and she did it!

What a fantastic experience We hiked to Acetanengo; a challenging hike but our guides were super supportive, kind, humorous & patient! They did a great job of working with a group of varied speeds! Guides Chris & Oscar were wonderful! I loved how the hike went through distinct eco-systems! It got a bit crowded in some sections but Chris was stellar at navigating alternate trails to pass folks. Absolutely loved getting to the summit at sunrise! Highly recommend this experience!

This was an epic type 2 adventure! Our guides, Chris and Oscar, were so great. They were knowledgeable about the mountain, took care with each of us when we needed special attention, and honestly we ended the journey as friends. The only thing I’d recommend is that you have warmer sleeping bags - it was quite cold at night. 10/10 would recommend!!

Diego and Oscar were amazing. The hike is somewhat difficult but our guides made it fun and educational. The views are epic! The camp is fantastic with great tents, food, and amenities. We were lucky to only have a group of 4, where other groups had almost 20. I would absolutely do this hike again and so glad we did it through Trek.
