The house was built in 1931 by an English aristocrat and planter Sir Thomas Villiers, former Chairman of George Steuart Co, a trading and estate agency based in Colombo. Sir Thomas was a grandson of Lord John Russell and descendant of the Dukes of Bedford. Named after Adisham, it was designed by R. Booth and F. Webster in Tudor and Jacobean style, on 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land. Adisham Hall played host to many prominent personalities of the colony until the retirement of Sir Thomas, after which it was sold to Sedawatte Mills owned by Vimala Wijewardene in 1949. In 1961 it was purchased by the Roman Catholic Church and was subsequently converted to a monastery. The house is well preserved along with its period fittings and furniture and is open to visitors. 01.00 PM – You will enjoy your lunch in the middle of the tea plantations and walk back to Haputale station to catch your train to Ella. 02.00 PM – Upon the train schedule, you will take your train to Ella between 02.00 - 02.30 PM. 03.30 PM – On arrival at Ella station, you will be taken by our TUK TUK driver back to your hotel. 04.00 PM – You will be dropped off to your hotel in Ella.

Adisham Bungalow in Haputhale is a hidden gem that offers a peaceful retreat amidst Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country. The location is absolutely breathtaking, with lush greenery and panoramic views that make the visit truly special. 🌄✨ The entrance tickets were surprisingly cheap, making it a great budget-friendly attraction. However, I do feel they could increase the price slightly to improve maintenance, as the place deserves a bit more care to preserve its charm. One of the highlights of our visit was the jams and chutneys made by the Benedictine priests – absolutely delicious! 🍓🥭 If you visit, make sure to grab some as souvenirs. Overall, Adisham Bungalow is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Haputale. Whether you’re a history lover, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, this place is well worth it!
