The Arctic Coastline slow drive tour goes along picturesque coastline road, impressive sea cliffs, small old fishing villages, local farmer's market and beautiful Siglufjörður.
Siglufjörður was the main herring town in Iceland during the “Herring years”. In the early 20th century the workers arrived in full force to the area to make the most of this exciting time.
Tour start in Akureyri and we do offer hotel, harbour or airport pickup/drop off free of charge.
We begin with a visit to a former herring village, Hjalteyri, stepping 50 years back in time. We visit the local farmer's market Vellir in a authentic Icelandic farmers community at Svarfaðardalur and in Siglufjörður we visit the award winning Herring Era Museum. Here you will have ample time to explore the boats, workers living quarters, and the factory areas of this impressive museum.
You will have time to explore the Siglufjörður town before we head back to Akureyri. Travel time is included in the total tour duration.

Awesome! Our guide was a plus to the route, explained all the spaces where we were and was also very nice. I personally love the magic of mythology and he gave that twist to everything. Awesome places!

Paid $256USD (after discount code) for this unique 5-hour tour. The driver (and tour guide!) showed up right in front of our ship at the port, approximately 5 minutes before tour meet time. We were incredibly lucky to have a nice big mini-bus for our small group of 5 people, you would never get this kind of small group tour on a ship excursion! Our guide (a very friendly local woman) was incredibly friendly, had answers for all of our questions, and was related to our had family involved in many elements of Iceland history - this all made our time so much more meaningful. We had already done the whole "Diamond Circle" thing to Myvatn and Godafoss and such and wanted something a little more local and this tour was PERFECT. Great drive through cute little villages and waterfronts to secluded churches, beaches, and views. Ending with some time at the Herring Museum facilities, which was much much more interesting and exciting than we expected - it spans 3 buildings and is wonderful and worth a longer visit. Overall we were thrilled with our guide, the bus was excellent, and we would highly recommend this tour to all who are looking for a break from the waterfalls :)

This was a fabulous tour! We've seen lovely glaciers and beautiful fjords, but some of the scenery on this trip was the best yet - both glaciers & fjords together. The highlight of the trip was the Herring Factory Museum - a look at the real lives of people and a way of life before tourist Iceland. Learning about the herring girls & viewing films from the 1920's - 1960's was fascinating. And our guide Lily was terrific - so knowledgeable and friendly. Her stories brought the history to life. So glad we took this tour!

Miscommunication between Viator and the company, this tour was on a different day! However, the company offered me a pleasant alternative and a refund, so it did end up well. Reliable customer service but just book directly on the site ;)

Guide was excellent, very informative and interesting history. Scenery is spectacular. Not a lot to do in the stops, but that was not the point. Museum was good and interesting, but a tour bus was there at the same time so it was very crowded. If the main thing you want to see is some beautiful scenery that is not on the main tourist itineraries, then this is the tour.

We had the most spectacular Icelandic experience yesterday in Akureyri. Our tour from Laijla was amazing! Her knowledge and experience made our visit to Iceland complete. The stops were well planned and enriched the experience. She was kind, courteous and professional, I cannot speak highly enough of the value we received for our money. We would strongly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to learn about the history and culture of the Icelandic people. We are so grateful and blessed to have had this wonderful opportunity here in Iceland!
