  • Brutal but interesting

Spent a couple of hours exploring the last in tact whaling station in the world which is now a museum. Only operating for 20 odd years this was a major source of employment in the area. Very hard life and obviously deadly for the whales. Not a trip for the sqeamish or children in my opinion. Glad to have seen it but not a place I would visit again.

  • Fascinating part of history but so sad.

We spent 2 hours walking around, watching movies & seeing so much. It is beautifully maintained & set out. The old tanks have been converted to display areas. There is a walk through the gardens but the weather was against us.

Interesting subject matter and insight into the history of the whaling station in Albany. Self guided tour took 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Great place to visit learning a lot about the early days. So much to see. It is a pity the day wasn’t so wet and windy because we would have stayed a lot longer. Well worth the visit

So much to see there. The old whaling ship, in particular, had a lot to look through. You walk from building to building and it can be very windy there, so dress appropriately.

  • A former working whaling base now preserved for history

This was an operating whaling station for 178 years and closed in 1978. It's history and working tools are intact. I found the whaling ship the most interesting, as well as the whale skeleton museum

  • Great insight to the whaling industry

Great insight to the horrific whaling industry in Albany. The station is as it was left when it closed. Many photos and testimonies from workers. Also some content which I could be upsetting as it shows catching and dismembering. This is a great advert for the banning of such trade.

  • Uncomfortable experience

uncomfortable experience, the museum only focuses on how these wonderful animals were killed and exploited, no questioning, no interesting information about marine mammals. we would have liked such an explanatory experience on the beauty and intelligence of these animals to counter balance and learn from our past mistakes.

A lovely drive from Albany to this historic whaling station. I'm glad that the killing of whales has stopped but our younger generations need to see the history. Well set out. Very good exhibits. There's even a full sized original whaling boat you can go on. Good souvenir shop and cafe. You could spend a few hours here.
