The practise of whale hunting is confronting but the museum showcased a strong community too. A growing community moving forward to seek, learn and create sustainable opportunities to continue living in a beautiful part of WA. Bravo Albany!

  • Honest and informative.

The experience was given as a gift. We spent over 4 hours here! Very informative and honest about the history of the station. The information boards were very helpful as were the video and audio presentations. We also visited the animals in the wildlife area and were pleased to see the white kangaroos!

  • Not to be forgotten history

This was a highlight of our time in Albany and truthfully we were the last to leave having totally lost track of time. The cafe had good menu choices and the entry/souvenir shop well appointed. Only one person serving so entry was slow. Plenty of playground and picnic areas. History (as gruesome as it was then) is honestly acknowledged and this attraction tells its own story.

  • AHWS one of the best

This has become one of my favorite museums ever. Much of the equipment from the last functioning whaling station in Australia has been retained and preserved making the experience more meaningful. Cheynes IV looks just like the last day it went to sea, lots of good info and 1st person accounts. I found the processing area very cool and you can picture the men flensing the huge animals out on the deck. My favorite part was the whale skeletons and you get an appreciation of the size of the creatures. We spent 3 hours here no problem, lots of stuff to keep the kids entertained as well, highly recommend a visit here.

  • Worth visiting

We took this tour from a cruise ship. The group was led by a guide for about 30 minutes and then we had time to browse the exhibits. The groups were a little big but I think that was the cruise line's fault. The tour was very interesting and the exhibits are excellent. We particularly enjoyed the whaling ship and whale skeletons. This was a highlight of our visit to Albany

We spent most of the day here and it was excellent. All staff very friendly and the exhibits were superb. Well presented story and the ability to tour the whaling sharp was superb. We also visited the cafe for lunch and the food was superb.

  • Poor experience

Admission desk also served as paypoint for shop for shop - with only one person manning, so lots of queues. Cafe - 20 minute wait for a coffee that was so bad we left having taken first sip. Wildlife Park was a concern. Not good conditions for animals to be held in - felt very much like an old-school zoo, which is not a compliment. Obviously a major tourist attraction/trap with lots of coaches outside. So busy in fact that, although we had paid $70 for 2x tickets, we abandoned and left.

  • Fabulous museum and day out - haven’t enjoyed a museum this much in ages!

So much to see and do, in every building and nook, and on the ship. The quality of the curation, the insights of the volunteer guides who had worked there before whaling ceased, and topped off with delicious scones with jam & cream and milkshakes overlooking the bay made it a wonderful and very interesting day out for all of us. There was too much to see and do, and we didn’t make it to the botanic gardens and wildlife park in our half day visit - they have a policy to happily extend the ticket so we can visit tomorrow. Definitely recommend as a memorable must see.

  • History of whaling is an unusual destination

Interesting piece of history displayed at an old whale processing center also has a small Australian wildlife enclosure and old whaling ship. ⁸

  • A balanced presentation of the whaling industry (as it was).

The museum is well laid out with many signs in English. I didn’t see any other languages which is a pity. Most areas have easy access for mobility impaired customers (obviously not up the decks of the whaling ship). We came on a cruise ship and found that none of the local tour operators were offering tours to the whaling station on the day our ship was in port. Unfortunately, the public transport stops about 12kms short of this museum. There were no hire car companies within the vicinity of the port. We contacted the tourist information centre in advance and obtained taxi contact details but abandoned that idea and paid the exorbitant amount for a tour from the ship. We later heard from other cruise passengers that they could not find a taxi in town despite being told that they could get one from behind the visitor information centre. If you are on a cruise you may have to pay through the nose to visit this outstanding attraction.
