Castelo de Tomar
Stunning, that's what I thought when I first walked along the walls, and I'm English I grew up with castles. I take you up the secret Templar paths, by the fountain of blood and skip all the hustle of tourists. The Castle of Tomar, is a stunning example of medieval architecture. Constructed in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, it served as their headquarters. Its strategic position atop a hill offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape. The castle features robust walls, towers, and a keep, showcasing both military might and religious symbolism. Over the centuries, it underwent expansions and modifications, blending various architectural styles. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and impressive fortifications.

Mark is an excellent tour guide who knows Tamar inside out. Very knowledgeable and flexible in his approach to adapting the walking tour to our needs and interests. Gave us fascinating info on the Knights Templar, etc., and the vagaries of life in Portugal through the ages.

I had a solo tour with Mark. He tells the story of Tomar and the Templars with great enthusiasm and knowledge. I learned so much about the Templars and Henry the Navigator. I appreciated the stops at the ceramic studio and the (odd) matchbook museum. He was very thoughtful of my age and mobility issues for which I was very grateful. Very glad I booked this tour.

Mark’s enthusiasm to share so many details of the history of Tomar is exceptional, He walks you through town and then up to the castle, the entire time sharing historical events in an easy to understand manner. Always ready to take questions; the group walk is a comfortable dialogue. Highly recommend. He also offered dining recommendations which we followed and had two of the best meals since being in Portugal. We even suggested he should start a Tomar foodie tour. This is by far the best tour to learn about Tomar.
