Step back in time to the rain-lashed streets of Angel Meadow – the Victorian Manchester slum so vile it was dubbed ‘Hell upon Earth’ by Friedrich Engels.
In the shadow of one of the world’s first cotton mills, 30,000 souls trapped by poverty are fighting for survival as the Industrial Revolution is built upon their backs.
Mancunian families are struggling to keep body and soul together in overcrowded lodging houses and deep cellars on the banks of the River Irk as gangs of scuttlers stalk the pavements outside.
In this new tour by me, historian and writer Dean Kirby, the author of the bestselling book Angel Meadow: Victorian Britain's Most Savage Slum, you will hear the hidden story of how the district and its people shaped one of the world's greatest cities.
Whether, like me, you are a descendant of Angel Meadow ancestors or have a burning passion to explore the history of Manchester, this tour is for you.

A really fantastic tour, thank you so much! Dean was really professional, informative and even did some lovely shout-outs regarding my husband's Angel Meadow ancestors who we'd mentioned before the day. The tour gave us a really good insight into how people lived in the area during Victorian times, and have us a whole new way of seeing Manchester. There were also some moving moments when other participants talked about their ancestors and when Dean played us a recording of the long-displaced St Michael's bell that would have sounded out over the Meadow. We'd highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Manchester history.

Last year Dean gave a talk to Manchester Lit & Phil about Engels in Manchester, in which the notorioius slum of Angel Meadows featured large. We had been around the area before but learned so much more from Dean's knowledgeable and very entertaining tour. It's about 90min with a reasonable amount of walking and a few steps, plus a short stroll alongside Manchester's glorious River Irk. This is where the modern industrial world began.......a great afternoon, thoroughly recommended.

The walking tour was very interesting & worthwhile. Dean was an excellent guide, extremely informative and very engaging. It was great to learn the history of an area of Manchester that I knew little of before the walk. Dean’s historical stories of the working people really brought the walk and area to life. Thoroughly enjoyable walk and talk. Highly recommended. Thank you Dean.

Fabulous informative tour. Dean has a wealth of knowledge about Angel Meadow which compliments his fantastic book. Dean sends detailed instructions prior to the tour on where to meet etc and the tour itself lasts around 90 minutes. Small group allows for plenty of questions to be asked. Very enjoyable for anyone who has ancestors from Angel Meadow or anyone who is interested in Manchester history in general.

Having ancestors from this area, I was particularly interested in taking Dean's history tour. The tour lasts around an hour and a half and isn't particularly strenuous. Dean is obviously an expert on Angel Meadow, having written a book by the same name. It wasn't just facts, figures and dates though as his stories were brought to life by a number of nefarious characters such as Cabbage Ann and Stumpy to name a couple. Loved seeing places I've never seen before and I'm a Mancunian. Thanks Dean !
