In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way.
Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal to very bright suddenly.
SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island, including coming from Vieques or Culebra. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.
Even if Viator system allows the guest to write weight over the limit, it will still be 240 lbs the weight limit.

Eli, Michael, Yadiel, Amaury and Catalina ran such a fun and educational night tour to see the bioluminescent dinoflagellates. It was well organized and exceeded my expectations. I really liked how we had some time while out in the bay to distance ourselves from the other kayaks and enjoy the glow and sounds of the water. Thank you!

Had a great time on the bio bay tour. Check-in with Catalina was simple and easy. Amaury, Eli, Yadiel, and Michael were fantastic guides, helpful when they needed to be and fun/irreverent for an easygoing vibe. They were so knowledgeable about the marine biology and even taught us about some constellations. The kayaking was challenging at times with crowded canals or low hanging branches, but overall great experience.

We had a great kayak to the bio bay even with a full moon. Pure Adventure was one of several kayaking companies out on the bay, but they were the only tour that turned off our kayak lights to improve visibility and brought a tarp we could put over our boats to simulate darkness. Amaury, David, Yadiel and Catalina were great. A special shout-out to Javier who knew a lot about marine biology, answered all our questions, and even showed us an iguana he spotted sleeping in a tree. The actual kayaking was straightforward, but I would not advise this for brand new kayakers. There isn't any current to struggle against but the path through the trees is very dark at times and tandem kayaking can be a little tricky.

Such an incredible experience! The bioluminescent bay tour with Pure Adventure Kayaking was amazing. Javier, Eli, Yadiel, Amaury and Catalina were super helpful and informative. My titi and I struggled a bit with kayaking, but Javier was so patient and even tied onto us to help us along—above and beyond service! The water wasn’t as glowy as I’ve seen online but when putting our hands in the water we could see the glow. We loved every minute of it and would absolutely do it again. Highly recommend!

Kayaking through the mangroves was really beautiful. The bioluminescence wasn’t super bright the night we went due to lower rainfall and th moon being almost full. Never the less we had a great experience. I would do it again.

Javier and his co-workers were great. They were knowledgeable, helpful, and fun. The paddle through the mangroves was a delight, especially seeing the damage done by the hurricanes 8 years ago. However, the bioluminescence was a total bust. The moon was at 90% making the sky too bright, so they brought out a tarp. Even under the tarp there was only a little shine from moving the water. Coming back through the mangroves in the darkest sections there was still very little shine. So be prepared for a nice time, just not what it is billed to provide.

Our family had a great time on the bio-bay tour. The crew of five (David, Javier, Eli, Amaury & Catalina) were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, from check-in, to instruction on kayaking, the glowing creatures as well as astronomy. They provided all with a wonderful experience. It’s challenging to kayak in the dark, but the glowing lights and verbal instructions made for an easy adventure. We recommend this tour even if you’re not experienced at kayaking.

The experience feels unreal and magical! The moon was pretty bright so a tarp was used to enhance our experience once we arrived at the bio bay. Kayaking in a mangrove canal at night was also quite fun. Our tour team (Javier, Amaury, Yadiel, Michael and Catelenai) ran the group (about a dozen double-person kayaks) very efficiently. Highly recommended!

This was a great tour! We chose the 6pm one because it allows you to enter with daylight, arrive to the lagoon with some light still and wait for sun down, and then when you return you are already familiar with the trek back. The guides were animated and knowledgeable, they share about the flora and fauna and they were even pointing out the stars and constellations for us! The night we went the moon was full and bright, beautiful to be in a lagoon but not the optimal conditions to see the bioluminescent organisms. The guides placed tarps over our canooes to create a dark environment and we were able to experience the luminosity of the organisms in the water. Highly recommended 😀

I had an amazing experience on the bioluminescent bay kayak tour in Fajardo! The guides were super friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure everyone felt safe and comfortable, even if you’ve never kayaked before. Paddling through the mangroves at night was truly magical, and the bioluminescent water glowing under our paddles was an unforgettable sight. The tour was well-organized, and they provided all the gear we needed. While the glow can vary depending on the moon and weather, the whole adventure — from the kayak ride to learning about the local ecosystem — made it totally worth it. If you’re looking for a unique nature experience in Puerto Rico, I highly recommend booking this tour.
