In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way.
Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal to very bright suddenly.
SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island, including coming from Vieques or Culebra. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.
Even if Viator system allows the guest to write weight over the limit, it will still be 240 lbs the weight limit.

This was total chaos! Thankfully we are experienced paddlers. Please don’t do this if you have never been in a kayak. It is complete darkness and you have to be able to keep up.

All 4 guides and the host were so helpful and kind throughout the night, especially Eli. He stayed with us and made sure we on track the whole time. Pure Adventure was great to communicate with prior to the tour, keeping us updated with weather and location details.

I had such an amazing experience at Pure Adventure Bio Bay! My family and I had the best time kayaking and getting to see the water sparkle and glow in the night. The whole tour was fun and an unforgettable experience thanks to our guides. A huge shoutout to our guides, Amaury, Eli, Javier, David and Catalina, who truly made the experience even better. They really made the experience that much better the entire time while also making us feel safe and comfortable. I definitely recommend doing the tour. You won’t regret it!

This was a very cool experience. My friend and I did the sunset 6:15 time. It would have been helpful to know in advance that the mosquitoes are THICK. I decided to wear my clothes into the water to cover more skin, plus we doused ourselves with (non DEET) bug repellent. We did a good job and didn’t get eaten alive, but other people in the group wore swim suits or athletic shorts and complained about the bugs. You have to walk through the water to get into the kayak, so water shoes would be a good idea. There is nowhere to rinse off after, so bring a towel and a change of clothes. Also if you’d like to take photos, bring a waterproof phone case. Fajardo is about an hour away from San Juan, and we ended up renting a car. Turned out half the price of the car services we looked at. If you do want to set up a service from San Juan, it’ll be around $250 and the sunset time is 5:45-8:15/30. There is a nice parking lot, so that’s easy. It was really fun to kayak through the mangrove trees, even after dark. :)

We had a great time! The staff was well informed, the experience was life-changing, and we learned so much! Special thanks for Gustavo for towing my wife and son on the way out - that current was no joke!

If you are looking for something like the movie “Avatar”, you will be disappointed. The kayak adventure as a whole was super fun and an adventure, and we did see some bioluminescence, but it was like sparkles in the water at a maximum. The best part was definitely the kayak through the mangrove forest. I recommend the adventure, but keep your expectations realistic and away from the pictures online.

I had such an amazing experience at Pure Adventure Bio Bay! My sister and I had the best time kayaking through the glowing waters. The whole tour was well organized, fun, and unforgettable from start to finish. A huge shoutout to our guides, David and Amaury, who truly made the experience even better. They were hilarious, energetic, and kept us entertained the entire time while also making us feel safe and comfortable. You can tell they genuinely love what they do, and their positive vibes made the night so special. If you’re thinking about booking this tour, DO IT!

This tour was pretty disappointing. While I understand the need to maximize profits, paddling nose to tail with about 15 - 20 other boats in our tour and multiple other tours with the same number paddling through a narrow canal to get to the lagoon with one of our guides yell-singing off key the who way until my partner asked him to stop kind of made what could have been an enjoyable night paddle much less enjoyable - particularly the unnecessary noise. We have had the fortune to see bioluminescence a number of times while sailing in the Caribbean, so the small amount of bioluminescence in this lagoon may have been more exciting for people who had never seen it before, but it was not a good value trip for us. The guides used tarps over 4 boats at a time to decrease light to be able to the bioluminescence, as promised and was necessary - there is a lot of ambient light near the lagoon and there was a quarter moon out the night we went. The lackluster, not terribly knowledgeable guide's description of constellations while you waited your turn was not particularly informative. In fairness, we don't do tours very often, but all in all, did not feel like this was a very high value experience.

The bioluminescence part is over rated and overhyped. If you go, it is still fun to kayak at night through the mangroves. You can't schedule your entire trip around the best night to go during the month, nor can you predict the weather 24 hours ahead. You can't cancel day of once you realize it will not be a "good bio night due to weather"
