In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way.
Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal to very bright suddenly.
SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island, including coming from Vieques or Culebra. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.
Even if Viator system allows the guest to write weight over the limit, it will still be 240 lbs the weight limit.

Tour guides were awesome. Recommend going with the 6pm tour with this company as you will be the first group of ~10 total groups to go out into the bay. It’s a tricky 10 minute paddle through mangroves to get out to the bay — doing this in the light on the way out makes coming back in the dark much easier / less scary (even got expert kayakers). Be advised while you don’t need to be an expert you do need to be WILLING to work and learn to kayak and flexible as there are some tricky sections especially in the dark with other boats around. Have patience, and listen to the guides (several people on the tour looked like they weren’t having fun as they weren’t giving it their all and being lazy / complaining) — this is an outdoor adventure tour on water, know what you are signing up for … all that said we had a fantastic time and would absolutely recommend. The bioluminescence was cool! We used a tarp to increase the contrast since we were the early group it was not pitch black yet. I can’t imagine going later would be that much better, but up to you.

Fabulous tour. Our guides (Javier, Yadiel, Gio, Amaury, and Catalina) were friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. They made sure everyone in the group got to and from the lagoon safely (I was with my 9yo son and we were not fast.) They pointed things out on our trip and even caught a jellyfish for us to look at. They brought a tarp to shield us from the light pollution and help us see the bioluminescence better. Definitely worth the trip and I highly recommend Pure Adventure.

This tour was great. Amuary, Javier, David, and Yadiel were wonderful guides. They were very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. Not only did we learn about the bioluminescent bay but got some great tips on Puerto Rican food! We took the 6PM tour. It was still light and we were able to see the trees in the mangrove channel that leads to the bay. Then, we were able to see the sunset while in the bay. When it was dark, we used a tarp to block the light pollution and be able to see the bioluminescence better. The trip back though the channel was in total darkness, so we were pleased that we saw it during the daylight. I would definitely recommend the tour with Pure Aventure,

The tour guides were absolutely fantastic, funny, engaging, and truly excellent at what they do. They brought so much energy to the experience and made everything both entertaining and informative from start to finish. You can tell they really care about what they do, and it made a big difference. Keep it up!

It gets crowded through the mangoes. It’s a lot of people that don’t know how to steer your canoe. And sometimes the current coming back is very hard with all that is still a fun experience. You will see the glow, but it definitely won’t be like in the pictures.

What a great adventure!! We were greeted by Amaury. He was very helpful and answered all our questions as we have an autistic 34yr old son. He made sure that he was safe and had a blast!! Catalina was the hosted who made us feel like family! The guides Javier, David & Yadiel were incredible, showing us and educating us about the bio bay. Don’t think about it,,,,just do it! Only do it with Pure Adventure Company!! 👏👏👏
