What a fabulous way to start the year! This was a fabulous hike and birding experience just for the two of us! Pablo had FaceTimed with us the Sunday before to give us a preview, ask about our expectations, and get an idea about what we wanted – long hike, short…? What a great idea! It really put us at ease – we were able to communicate that we aren’t hard-core hikers (or birders for that matter). He told us to bring hiking boots and poles – another great idea – the excursion would not have been nearly as enjoyable without the right equipment. Pablo and his wife, Marly, met us in the lobby of our hotel at 7 AM. Pablo offered us 2 options: go directly to the wetlands area at Estancia Vega Catillo or take a longer route and observe birds along the way. This would give us the chance to observe larger birds of prey that would not be seen in the wetlands. We chose the latter and were glad we did! Pablo and Marly are a great team – He drove and spotted and she spotted with binocs. Pablo is a great communicator and really knows about birds and plants and the history and characteristics of the region. He even explained the unusual lenticular cloud formations we saw. When we spotted birds, Pablo pulled over, sometimes reversing, so we could get out and take a look – he told us about each species’ habits, physical characteristics and distribution. Pablo was very flexible and willing for us to take the time we needed for photography and just looking around and enjoying nature. By my count, by the end of the day we saw at least 19 species of birds. The weather was gorgeous! Sunny but very windy. When we got to Estancia Vega Castillo, we paused for a sumptuous brunch prepared by Pablo and Marly and served beautifully. The view over the wetland area was stunning. We got back to the hotel around 5:30 pm, tired and happy. If you have the opportunity, take this tour!

Had an amazing time birding with Cirrus Patagonia! Pablo is an incredibly knowledgeable guide and provided us with amazing sightings of birds that are endemic to Chile. He is adept at spotting birds and helped provide excellent photographic experiences. As good a guide he is, he is an even better person so you will really enjoy spending time with him and learning about the Chilean culture. I highly recommend his company!
