Insightful, private off the beaten track journey in a legendary 1970-1990’s Czechoslovak Škoda car (or a modern van by 4+ guests) with our local guide to the most intriguing spots of the Cold War era Bratislava.
Explore a vast concrete housing estate, the Soviet monument Slavín, post-industrial developments, the Iron Curtain border zone and loads of communist-era architecture. The tour brings alive the fascinating story of Bratislava in the turbulent 20th century.
What can you expect? Cool drive and quirky stops to see and understand:
- the first prefabricated apartment block in Slovakia as well as the largest socialist housing project, Petržalka
- communist-era architecture (inverted pyramid of Slovak Radio, rocket-shape TV tower Kamzík, Freedom Square)
- political objects: Soviet memorial Slavín, diplomatic 1970’s hotel, 1980’s parliament, villas of former communist leaders
- controversial ufo-like SNP bridge, causing destruction of the Jewish district
- former Iron Curtain area

A fabulous tour. Great mix of history, personal stories, sites, snacks, of course the van, and more. Peter was a great guide who took us to places you would not find / see alone. A real highlight.

Maros was a phenomenal guide, collected at our hotel, walked a bit of the old town, got plenty of information with personal experience knitted into it. Was a great tour and would recommend to anyone. from the bunker to Freedom square he made the trip unforgettable. Added at the end was a list of recommendations for bars, restaurants, snacks ad movies listed throughout the trip.

The post-communist tour is a unique way of seeing Bratislava off the beaten path. Richard took us through the 20th century history of Slovakia, with its own unique experience of going from democracy during the interwar period, to being a puppet state, to an occupation, a revolution, divorce, and back to democracy. Driving in the 1990s Škoda Favorit and trying horalki and kofola at a farmer’s market that hasn’t changed since the 1970s made the experience even more special and 100% authentic. Standing at the spot where once two worlds were divided by the iron curtain for decades was really special. A great tour, extremely knowledgeable, informative and accommodating guide, a must do when in Bratislava.

We had a very enjoyable and interesting trip with Jan. He brought us to places we’d never have got to ourselves including the border with Austria and the war memorial. The 90’s Skoda was great too!

Went on this tour with my 17yr old nephew who was very interested in Slovakian history and architecture. Our tour guide Martin was outstanding! He listened to my nephew’s interests and catered to exactly to what he wanted. It was the highlight of his trip and is all he talks about. I’m pretty well travelled and have taken a lot of these tours, myself. I can easily say this was the most fun I’ve had on a tour ever! We learned a lot and had such a great time on top of that. Thank you so much Martin for giving my nephew what he’s calling the highlight of his life!!

We did not know what to expect! But we had a blast… Our driver was fantastic, and he was super knowledgeable and kept a great pace. He showed us places we would never have known about existing in Bratislava. Highly recommend this fun way to see the city.

Richard was a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. We saw many parts of Bratislava we would not have otherwise seen, especially where the iron curtain was between Czechoslovakia and Austria. We also saw sites where uprisings and protests took place and memorials of those who fought for freedom. Riding in a vintage Skoda was icing on the cake. Overall a very interesting and fun experience that I would definitely recommend.

I went on this tour with my father, and we both really enjoyed it. The guide was very informative and brought the history to life - it truly felt like we were reliving that time. He even spent extra time with us at the end, which we really appreciated. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

Had a wonderful time with my guide Richard on a windy but sunny day in Bratislava. He was so knowledgable; it feels like he knows every detail about the city, but not only that, he was so caring and thoughtful to make my time comfortable and enjoyable. Although we did not drive a very long distance in 4.5 hrs, it felt like a time travel--thanks to his informative storytelling and the various types of building we saw, along with the 30+ years old (but very comfy-riding!) Skoda Favorit! For persons who are deeply interested how the city has transformed with different political regimes, this tour is the must-consider program in Bratislava! Thank you so much!!
