Yanar Dag

Yanar Dag (Azerbaijani: Yanar Dağ, meaning "burning mountain") is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (a country which itself is known as "the Land of Fire"). Flames jet into the air 3 metres (9.8 ft) from a thin, porous sandstone layer. Administratively, Yanar Dag belongs to Absheron District of Azerbaijan. Unlike mud volcanoes, the Yanar Dag flame burns fairly steadily, as it involves a steady seep of gas from the subsurface. It is claimed that the Yanar Dag flame was only noted when accidentally lit by a shepherd in the 1950s. There is no seepage of mud or liquid, which distinguishes it from the nearby mud volcanoes of Lökbatan or Gobustan.

Ateshgah - Fire Temple

The Baku Ateshgah (from Persian: آتشگاه‎, Atashgāh, Azerbaijani: Atəşgah), often called the "Fire Temple of Baku" is a castle-like religious temple in Surakhani town (in Suraxanı raion), a suburb in Baku, Azerbaijan. Based on Persian inscriptions, the temple was used as a Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian place of worship. "Atash" (آتش) is the Persian word for fire. The pentagonal complex, which has a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a tetrapillar-altar in the middle, was built during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was abandoned in the late 19th century, probably due to the dwindling of the Indian population in the area. The natural eternal flame went out in 1969, after nearly a century of exploitation of petroleum and gas in the area, but is now lit by gas piped from the nearby city.

I am delighted to share my incredible experience on the guided tour organized by Zaur in Burning Mountain in Azerbaijan. This experience was simply breathtaking and gave me a fascinating glimpse of the natural and cultural beauty of this region. Our guide, Zaur, was extremely competent and passionate about his country. He transported us on a captivating journey through the wonders of the fiery mountain. His vivid storytelling and interesting anecdotes made the tour not only educational, but also entertaining. I highly recommend this experience!!!!

Me and my girlfriend took this tour without knowing what to expect but we ended up really enjoying ourselves. The locations that we visited had a clear and interesting history which was fun to learn about. As well as the sites themselves, the success of the tour was down to our 5 star guide, Zaur. Friendly and knowledgeable, he brought a relaxed atmosphere to the day and sent us away with new knowledge of the zoroastrians and Azerbaijan in general.

On discovering my train the next day out of Baku was leaving much later than originally expected I was in a quandary! What on earth could one do to fill out a whole day? A tour would be nice, however as I was a solo traveler on a microscopic budget a VIP private tour was well and truly out of the question. To complicate matters further as it was late I wouldn’t be able to ask my hotel to arrange anything. Thus I found myself turning to Viator to see if there were any group tours that could be joined last minute. A quick search unearthed this option ran by “amazing Azerbaijan” which sounded perfect! A morning excursion that included both the burning mountain, the fire temple and lunch for very budget friendly price, what more could you ask for! I booked and then headed out down to the cafe that ran in conjunction with my hotel to while away an hour or so with friend. On getting back to my room late that night I discovered a series of messages from Zaur, owner of the company. As I was the only one who had booked a tour for that day he gave me a list of options, one of which was to turn the tour in to a VIP tour for a small fee. The 3 figure price tags of some of the Viator VIP tours flashed before my eyes and I hesitantly, more from curiosity then anything else, asked how much it would be thinking I wouldn’t not get an answer back as it was approaching 10pm. Imagine my surprise when an answer came through with in a minute or two and the figure Zaur quoted could easily be mistaken for pocket change. Needless to say choice was now a no brainer! Thus it was all arranged and a pick up time for 10am in the morning was organised. When I met up with him he next day Zaur informed me that after our correspondence another person had booked the slightly longer tour which also involved the mud volcanos and Gobstan and I was more than welcome to extend my trip to a whole day tour and include these as well if I wished. I wished! I have to say, hand on heart, booking a tour with Amazing Azerbaijan was one of the best decisions I made on my entire trip. The sights on the tour were nothing short of remarkable. From the mystic beauty of the fire temple to the other worldly landscape of the mud volcanos and the timeless stillness of Gobstan ( which we had practically all to our selves since it was close to closing time) it truly was a remarkable tour and I could easily wax lyrical about it for many paragraphs to come! However I will refrain from doing so, dear reader, so that you have the opportunity to experience these remarkable sight yourself afresh. However, even the most amazing destinations are nothing if you don’t have remarkable guide. In Zaur one finds, with out question, a remarkable guide! He is kind, courteous and professional ( with excellent English) which means that apart from being extremely knowledgeable he is also a genuine delight to be around and made the long day fly by. I really can not thank him enough! I sincerely hope this will be just the first of many more tour I have the pleasure of taking with Amazing Azerbaijan whenever I am next in Baku.

We had a group tour with people from different countries and we went on this tour. It was amazing since it was the first time I saw a burning mountain. Also the fire temple really bewildered me. Because the guide was indeed knowledgable and told us about the history of all religions practiced there: hinduism zoroastrianism and sikhs. I genuinely recommend this to everyone willing to come to Azerbaijan!!!

Thanks to all the team for an organized and awesome trip.If you want to see a unique and interesting thing you have to visit Burning Mountain & Fire Temple. I have known Zaur and Nofal for 2 years. They are not the only tour guide, they are also your friend while a trip. One of the reasons, I chose "Amazing Azerbaijan". Thanks to them, they explained to us the history of this place. I learned many things. I mean that you don't only travel, you also learn something. Consequently, I appreciated their teamwork and I advise everyone to join. Thanks for everything, Amazing Azerbaijan.
