Did you know that Afro-Uruguayan candombe is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity? And that tango owes much of its musical foundation to the rhythm of candombe? Would you like to learn more about this culture of music and dance and experience it? If you’re looking for answers to these and other questions, and you want to see a private performance by local musicians, this is the experience for you. We will explore the history and folklore of candombe, as well as the different elements of a traditional comparsa: the drums, the dancers, and the emblematic characters that take over the streets during Uruguay’s carnival parades, known as llamadas. Candombe has deep roots in Uruguay’s history, closely linked to the African slaves who were forcibly brought across the ocean, far from their homeland. Music and dance became a vital way of preserving identity, memory, and a sense of belonging. Uruguay’s musical landscape cannot be fully understood without candombe. We will also discuss its influence on tango and highlight some of its most important references in Uruguayan music. Looking forward to live this experience with you!

It was a special experience with Idoia and her group. Idoia was enthusiastic and gave us a lot of background information about the history of this kind of music. We really enjoyed the enthusiasm and enjoyed playing with them.
