Chawton
I look forward to spending a day together on the footsteps of Jane Austen! This tour is a perfect day-trip from London to discover an authentic English countryside village with unique connections to one of the most famous writers in the world. Chawton is a picture-perfect, quintessentially English village in the heart of the South Downs National Park, in Hampshire with fairy tale thatched cottages, a beautiful park and cosy stone church But Chawton is best known for being the place where Jane Austen lived happily the final eight years of her life and wrote or completed most of her famous novels, including Emma and the final version of Pride & Prejudice. As the world celebrate the anniversary of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, 2025 is definitely the perfect year to visit Chawton. On this one-and-a-half-hour guided tour, I will take you on a journey of discovery through the village that Jane Austen knew and loved and provide you with lots of information about the connections between many of the beautiful village cottages and Jane’s life. In addition, I will give you glimpse into what life is like in an English village today based on my personal experience of Chawton resident.
Jane Austen's House
The House where Jane Austen lived the final eight years of her life with her mother, sister (both named Cassandra) and best friend Martha Lloyd. The tour starts outside Jane Austen’s House, that is right in the heart of the village, and ends outside Chawton House, the country mansion inherited by her brother Edward. In my introduction I’ll provide you with some general information about this important building although, for a proper deep dive, I strongly encourage you to visit it before or at the end of my tour – it is definitely worth it! Jane Austen’s House is today a well-run museum managed by a Foundation and is generally considered the best place in the world to immerse yourself into Jane Austen’s world. Access to Jane Austen’s House in NOT included in my tour. My advice is to book your ticket in advance on the House’s website as access is limited and in high demand.

I had a truly wonderful experience with this tour, and I can’t recommend it enough. What makes it so unique is not just the beautiful setting in the charming village of Chawton, but the way Laura brings everything to life. She doesn’t simply guide you through the houses and locations, she takes you on a journey into Jane Austen’s world. Through her storytelling, you begin to understand the person behind the novels, the key moments of her life, and the atmosphere that shaped her writing. Laura’s passion, knowledge, and personal touch make the experience feel intimate and authentic. It’s not just a tour; it’s an immersion into history and literature. If you are visiting and want something meaningful and memorable, this is absolutely worth it.

Laura’s tour of Chawton was one of the most magical visits we’ve made in the UK. The tour was in English. We loved the fact that she herself lives in the village and could tell us many anecdotes and curiosities, not only of Jane Austen, but also of the present. We had a great time!

I visited Chawton on a sunny day towards the end of September. As it happened, the other members of that day's tour group had had to cancel, so I had the guide Laura to myself. It was a wonderful experience. Laura is a lovely lady and so knowledgeable about Jane Austen and about Chawton, which she clearly loves. Her commentary brought the village and its past inhabitants to life for me and added so much to my visit. I recommend this tour without hesitation. Mille grazie Laura!

Nice experience with Laura, prepared, kind and nice. Jane Austen with her came to life through a careful visit to the places she frequented. Nice to know where and with whom he was, who they were in his friends and how to live. Without such an experienced guide we would have lost much of the place

I love England, I love the English countryside, I love Jane Austen... and so meeting Laura was like meeting a "sister". The tour is delightful, Laura is an inexhaustible source of very accurate information and Chawton is a heavenly vision to fill your eyes with. Thanks again Laura!

Laura was magnificent in illustrating the town of Chawton and its various features, ranging from architecture to history, from country life to the villagers. We only discovered Laura last year, finding her videos on YouTube while looking for something to immerse ourselves in Britishness with from afar. When I saw that it had recently started offering guided tours to Chawton themed Jane Austen (and beyond), I could not help but book it for me and my parents during our trip to Bath for the Jane Austen Festival. I would recommend Laura as a guide to anyone, she was a real gem of our 10 days in England. We were left wanting to return to the English countryside and we hope to see Laura again. Thank you!

Don't hesitate! Book a tour with Passione Campagna Inglese. A delightful tour of the village in a small, select group following by (separately) a delicious lunch in the local pub. Our guide was knowledgeable, informative and thoroughly good. In fact, so good I would book to return to do the tour again.

It was a pleasure to take Chawton's guided tour with Laura. A competent, empathetic and easygoing person. The place is beautiful and Laura, living there, has a particular passion and knowledge for the place she tells. Laura was also available to help me with an internet connection problem I had. Whether you love Jane Austen or not this is a place to visit!
