Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

A lot of stairs but very Beautiful scenery. Manny and Geraldo were excellent and friendly guides. They told us exactly what the agenda was, where to be and ensured no one got left behind.

A great value for your money! Fantastico guides and a day filled with amazing sights food and drink. You will be lucky if you get Manny who was our main guide. Loved him. All the guides were great. Highly recommend this tour - they do a great job of fitting in getting to see all 5 cities but they also allow a great deal of flexibility.

My favorite thing we did, absolutely worth it and a perfectly organized tour! Guides were incredible, we had Anna and Joann and they were the BEST. Entertained us with fun facts about the regions we drove through from Florence to Cinque Terre (we even got to see a peek of the Carrara marble quarry), made sure to repeat important info like meeting times and places in each town/how to contact them in case of emergency/that we could always ask them to wait for us if we needed to rest along the trail or stop last minute for the bathroom. We got a nice explanation of the layout of the town, important places we might want to stop, best places to eat, AND tips for best lookouts/photo points in each town before being released to explore on our own- we got about an hour (usually more) free time in each town. We had lunch in Corniglia with the group and guides, the pesto was delicious and the views of the sea and town from the resistant were beautiful. I recommend the hike more than anything!!! We had perfect weather and the trail was very manageable, beautiful views of Corniglia and Manarola as you hike away from them beside the sea and the walk into Vernazza was gorgeous. A little gelato after the hike was heaven. Ferry ride to Riomaggiore gave us nice views of all the towns as we winded down the tour. Joann and Anna made sure we all got time to take pictures in front of the iconic view of the town, and made sure to point out the best spot for fried anchovies. They way this tour was organized was really perfect, they had us bypass this busiest town until the majority of all the other tourists had left the park for the day and besides a few crowds, we had enough time to have some places virtually to ourselves at times. A truly unreal day altogether, I can’t believe we saw so much and everything went so smoothly- and it’s really all because we chose a great tour and had two GREAT guides. Anna and Joann even made sure to make themselves available for questions after the day was over and we were making our way back to Florence, giving everybody tips on additional sights to see in the area. I really couldn’t recommend this tour enough!
