Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Wonderful full day trip to Cinque Terre. We are so glad we decided to go - the villages are beautiful. Our guides Jerry, Claudia and Juan Carlos were outstanding. They definitely made the day fun and educational. The transportation (bus, train and boat) all were excellent. I would highly recommend this day trip.

Note: Lots of walking, especially up hill. Do not recommend if you are not in shape or able to move easily. With that said, this, so far, was my favorite day in Italy! The guides (Claudia was amazing and Irene and Ana were awesome too!) were so friendly, funny and helpful. It’s a long day, so get prepared. But not likely one you will ever forget. If you like healthy activities, this one will mark all the boxes, views included. Wear good shoes and bring sunscreen. Favorite day of the trip, hand’s down. I met great people that day too! I went alone and met many friends before the day was over!

This is the perfect way to see Cinque Terre. Our guides were Irene, Anna, & Claudia. They were knowledgeable, funny and a lot of fun to be around. The days schedule is packed so you need to make sure you keep an eye on your watch but you are given plenty of time to see each village. The hike is not hard at all and the views are really amazing! We were not able to do the boat trip due to sea conditions but still had a blast! It is a Full Day thought, you are gone from 7am to 9pm.
