Borgo Storico di Manarola

Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

We opted for the transport option and if you are going that route, I highly recommend it as the tour guides were still super helpful in getting to the bus and in the bus in giving recommendations for our own adventure. Meeting up with the rest of the group was also very easy and our tour guides, Anna and Joanne, didn’t make it feel like we’d be left behind. They always made sure to account for us. Jojo also had excellent recommendations that she shared with us just as with the rest of the group. Highly recommend this!

Got to see all the areas, you don’t have a ton of time in each one, but that was expected. We had a wonderful time. Lots of walking, stairs, but that was anticipated.

The directions to the meeting point was clear, and the staff made it easy for us to find the exact spot to meet up with everyone. We had two tour guides in the coach with us on the way to Cinque Terre, and they both did their best in explaining the nearby sights when we passed by different towns. Two coaches of people were split into three groups with a tour guide along with each, and depending on what mode of travel we would be choosing that day, we were directed to follow different guides in different parts of the tour. We were also allowed to choose to join the guides at their chosen restaurant for a meal for an extra of €17.5 (cash) per person, or to explore town 3 ourselves for food. There was also a small hiccup with the distribution of the Cinque Terre Pass on the bus, but I think the guides dealt with it to the best of their ability, so it wasn’t too bad. One of the tour guides, Anna, was particularly cheerful and was able to introduce sights in a clear and organised manner where a person with minimal knowledge of the place was able to grasp a basic understanding by following her thought process. We were allowed to explore the villages on our own accord as soon as we reached each village and were given an optional short and brief introduction of the village and a meeting point to join up again with the group to take the trains in between villages. The guides know exactly when, what, and where everything would happen for the trip and did their best to express it to such a large group of people from a diverse background (ie. When the group split into two for the optional hiking, the non hiking group were brought to town 4, one of the smallest towns, to explore individually for an hour or so as the others hiked there, and the guides made it clear where we would be meeting everyone to go to town 5 together, the biggest town, to walk around ourselves for around 40 mins before meeting somewhere else to go onto the boat ride). I am certain that this tour would be made better if more information of the terrain (ie. Rock/soil type, the factors of the land that influenced people to live in these areas) and a more elaborate explanation/description of the details in the villages that we would have missed even with Google otherwise (ie. architecture, people living in the villages, their culture, village stories) could be included; as well as a more secure way of contacting with the tour guides (ie. Whatsapp, as not every person in the group is equipped with a phone number available to be used in their holiday) to ease people’s worries when they were given free time to explore the villages alone without the guides. Overall, it was a more or less a worry-free experience as all your transport was lead by the guides in the tour, and it is possible to enjoy the trip with zero previous knowledge of the area.

  • Amazing tour with fantastic guides.

This tour was completely worth it! We got to see and learn about so many things. Our tour guide Manuel was amazing, so knowledgeable, so kind and patient! He’s the best!! Would highly recommend this tour to anyone. The cities we visited were so beautiful, I loved that we had free time but also had the tour guide explain and make recommendations, Manuel had great recommendations. The focaccia he recommended is a must have! The best thing I’ve ever tried, I got the pesto cheese and I’m not even a lover of pesto and this rocked my world! Book this tour!! PS the hike portion is no joke, it has absolutely beautiful views and please ensure you are in physical fitness because it is intense!!!
