Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Amazing trip! Claudia was an exceptional guide: friendly, easy going and yet paying attention to all details. Great beauty, wonderful hik, delicious lunch I went a la carte (try the sardines with lemon and pesto pasta). Loved how each village had its own vibe. Incredible views. Ease of transport with trains in the off season. Delicious gelato - crema cinque terre- no idea what specific flavor but i wanted more! The bus was so clean and comfortable. Our driver was wonderful too. A fabulous day trip. We did the hike and did not go to Pisa. Great to see the water, the coastline and get a different perspective of Italy.

We had a spectacular time on this tour and we were able to visit all five villages. Chris was a wonderful and knowledgeable guide. I wish that we had more time in Florence so we could have tried one of his cooking classes. We did two tours with this company and each tour was much better than advertised. I would recommend the tours from this company to anyone who is looking for a unique travel experience. If you are visiting in the winter you will want to dress in layers especially if you are hiking. Our safety and comfort was the first priority. Chris was able to give us a test hike at the first village to make sure that we would be able to complete full the journey. If someone decided that they could not complete the hike, there was always a bus for them on standby so they could meet us at the next village. The steps that you have to climb during this hike are not like typical stairs and they are very short and spread out. We were with travelers of all ages and they were able to complete the full journey. The views were spectacular and Chris even made sure that our hike was perfectly timed so he could fit in some surprises along the way. Chris also arranged an optional lunch for us at a charming bistro that served authentic cuisine and our meal was phenomenal. This meal was also perfectly timed to coincide with our arrival and the service was excellent. We feel extremely lucky to have been able to take this tour and visit the five beautiful villages of Cinque Terre.

The tour guide, Claudia was wonderful! ! I’m a solo traveler and she really made me feel so comfortable and relaxed, almost like seeing the sights with a good friend. She was informative, flexible enough to go at my pace, offered to take pictures so I’d have some keepsakes with me in it and even shared some tips for what I could do for the rest of my trip in Florence. I highly recommend a tour with her!

We went on the Transport Only option. The guides Alessandro and Ado were incredibly helpful, taking time to talk to us about what we wanted to do and giving us advice on which sections were best to walk and where to get the train. They helped us to buy our train and park tickets, and gave us all the information we needed. We were incredibly grateful for all of their help, which set us up to have a fantastic day. Emiliano was a great coach driver, making the journey to and from relaxing and enjoyable.

This tour was just the right amount of independent exploring and guided excursion. We loved our guide, Manuel, who was well informed, appropriately thoughtful about the differences in skill levels in the group but not at all patronizing. He also made some great recommendations for a day trip we'd planned to another area.

We were so grateful we could reschedule our tour due to bad weather. We were able to enjoy a beautiful, sunny day! Our tour guides were wonderful! Ado and Alessio spoke perfect English, were informative as well as humorous, plus high energy. I missed the bus to the top, but Alessio stayed behind and walked with me to ensure my safe arrival. I truly appreciated his kind consideration. Taking the buses between villages was a great way to see them all within the time frame.

My wife and I had an excellent experience with Walkabout Tours on the day-long Cinque Terre tour and hike. Alessandro and Emma did an exceptional job on the tour and covered many dimensions and characteristics of the Tuscan and Cinque Terre regions: Historical, political, economic, geographic, geologic, agricultural, and cultural. As a side note, if you have Alessandro as a guide and you had a family member who was part of the WWII Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy, it is worth having a side conversation with him as time allows.
