Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Truly awesome experience all around! Cinque Terre is STUNNING!! We were lucky enough to enjoy all 5 villages by train, hike and boat! Manuel and Ado were absolutely fabulous! We couldn’t have asked for better guides. The walk between villages 3 & 4 was strenuous but we are so glad we did it! The promise of gelato in Vernazza saw us through the last portion of the hike!! We would highly recommend this tour!

This excursion is a must! My guides were Claudia, Irine, and Ado. All were amazing with great attitudes and extremely helpful. I spent the most time with Ado when we separated into smaller groups. He was on it; made accommodations for everyone. I was usually straggling behind because I was busy taking pictures or enjoying the hike (beautiful and not too difficult) - Ado was there to make sure I knew what the plan was and good options for activities with the time I had in each town. Highly recommend this trip and Ado! 10/10.

Without a doubt this was the highlight of our holiday and a tour we recommend to anyone. Our guides Claudia, Irene & Ardo were absolutely fantastic and were the best. They coordinated our groups with precision and explained throughout the tour about what to expect and where to go. The optional hike between Corniglia & Manarola was demanding but absolutely rewarding for the views you take in. Both Irene & Claudia continuously checked in on everyone doing the hike which was absolutely fantastic. Finishing the tour with a boat ride to Monterosso Al Mare was absolutely spectacular and provided scenery that was absolutely breathtaking.

There are many places to visit in Italy, but we recommend this tour highly. It's the hidden gem. We loved the scenery, the tour guides and food. If you are up to a small hike, the one that goes to the highest city and down, is the best! It was brilliant! The juice bar at the top is very refreshing. We loved the slushy. Our guides had great information about each town and suggestions on what to see. There was usually time to investigate each stop. The boat ride back (which can't be guaranteed, because of weather), provides an overall stunning view the area. It was a long day, but we would do it again in a heartbeat, and recommend it to all who may be going to Italy. If you decide not to hike, there is train to the next town. The hike is beautiful but not required. There are some steep zigzag stairs before the hike, to help you determine if you want to take the hike. The food was delicious! We didn't eat with the tour, but we could have, as what we ordered was the same and everyone who ate with the tour enjoyed their food. If you have the time, this is the tour to take!
