Great food tour with an amazing local guide, Kari Por! We ate Icelandic hot dogs, ice cream, and a delicious lamb stew. However, what made this tour so special was Kari’s energy, humor, and openness in sharing his personal insights and stories. It really made the tour so much more than good food and a history of buildings. If you just Yelp places to eat and walk around town by yourself, you will miss the history, context, and personal stories that makes a food tour with a local guide like Kari so special. Thank you Saga Travel and Kari!

Kari was our tour guide and we had so much fun! The trip during lunchtime takes you to eat lamb soup but the trip in the evening takes you to eat seafood soup. We took this trip in the evening and thought the soup was fantastic. We had a local hotdog and local ice cream.. we also had a chance to try some other local delicacies that he brought along with him. It was a very nice evening of walking around, although there was more walking than we had anticipated we got to see other parts of the town and learn a lot about the culture of the city.

From start to finish, our walking/food tour with Kari was absolutely phenomenal. We’ve taken many tours like this all over the world, but Kari was hands-down the best guide we’ve ever had! His passion for the city’s history, combined with his incredible storytelling, made every stop come alive. The food was equally amazing—each bite felt like a piece of the culture and history we were exploring. Kari had the perfect balance of knowledge, humor, and warmth, and made the experience unforgettable. If you’re considering booking, don’t hesitate—this tour is worth every penny!

Our tour guide, Fonn, was amazing and knew everything about the city since she was born & raised there. We were given all kinds of information about Akureyri & felt like we had the experience we were looking for. All the food options that we were given were excellent and a nice tour of the old part of Akureyri with history. Weather was also very nice for the walking tour, which made it even more pleasant.

Had a wonderful time exploring Akuyeri with our local guide Jon who spoke perfect English. Had a few stops along the way to try food. Note the meeting spot is in the Europcar parking lot. Look for the the guides that say Saga Travel.

Actually one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. Guide was well versed on history and latest developments taking place in the city and ferry islands within 3 hours of the city. I learned about what impacts were significant and change the course of life here. The food tour tied quite nicely into our walk throughout the city. The food tour started with a local hot dog and explanation of its presentation being slightly different in other cities. Next food was a fabulous fish soup at the restaurant in the Botanical gardens with lovely bread and yummy butter. Mug of delightful beer was served. Conversation was easy. There were lots of stops in each part of the city. Abundance of information given about the three sections of the city, sports competition, former cove area and housing, school requirements, summer jobs, churches as well as visually came upon each site. Heart shaped traffic lighting added to the softness and kindness that the people have for each other. I learned what every day youngsters and teenagers do in the city and the two islands nearby. Ice cream at a local hangout for inhabitants was a usual place for dating. So much to see and so much to enjoy. This tour became more customized to my inquires and made it more personalized for me. Quite a talent of the guide to draw you in to what the food, people and architecture of the town. Walk was back to starting point of the tour with a seafront type of walk. This tour’s elements were walk and food. However, it is more than that and you could do this tour over and over and over again and learn more and more and more about this city beloved by the people and the guide. Thank you so very much.
