We had an fantastic kayaking experience with Bryan. He was very knowledgeable but didn't talk the entire team which my husband and I both appreciated. We were able to observe manatees and dolphins in their natural habitat, an experience neither of us will forget anytime soon.

Taking a bioluminescence tour wasn’t the top priority when we made plans for visiting Cocoa Beach, but it wound up being the most memorable part of the entire trip. We arrived and met our guide for the night, Leo, and his sign-in table by lamplight. We were handed mildly damp life vests with little safety lights attached, and each given a paddle. They went over some basic techniques on land, we paired up to assign kayaks, and we went directly down to the water. The staff carried our kayaks for us and held them still while we stepped through the mud and into the clear boats, one pair at a time. Getting onto the water was like sailing through a void: pitch black and nearly silent. Once our guide was with us in the water, he briefly explained the type of phytoplankton that makes this glowing phenomenon. It turns out that these unique conditions, the temperature and salinity of water right where we were, was just right for these little guys. This is not an experience you can get just anywhere. The biology is spectacular, it felt like they weren’t from earth. We were trying to get pictures of how alien this whole thing looked, especially the comb jellies we caught with our hands. As bright as they were to our eyes, it was too dark out for us to get anything good with our phones. Leo himself took a picture with his own phone, using long exposure settings that gave us a brilliant image to keep. In traveling, one of my primary goals is to gain experiences I can’t get anywhere else, and this bioluminescence tour is at the top of my list. I’m so glad I didn’t miss it.
