A shared table for everyone — this experience begins with the joy of eating the same meal together, regardless of dietary background.

It’s more than cooking; it’s a celebration of connection and cultural exchange through food.

A visit to a warm and welcoming kitchen in Aomori reveals the culinary traditions passed down through generations.

Over three hours, engage with local grandmothers who share their wisdom and stories while guiding you in preparing seasonal dishes.

What To Expect

Step into a cozy home in Aomori and experience the warmth of Japanese hospitality. In this 3-hour hands-on class, you’ll cook side by side with local grandmothers who have spent their lives preparing seasonal dishes with local ingredients. They’ll share family recipes, stories, and wisdom passed down through generations. Before cooking, enjoy a short introduction to Aomori’s geography, climate, and traditions to see how nature shapes its food culture — from snowy winters to lush summers. Then, roll up your sleeves and prepare comforting local dishes such as keno-jiru (vegetable miso soup), onigiri rice balls, and seasonal sides. You’ll learn how to wash, cut, and season ingredients the Japanese way, using simple techniques you can easily recreate at home. After cooking, everyone gathers around one table to share the meal — an inclusive, plant-based menu suitable for vegan and vegetarian guests. Enjoy the flavors, stories, and laughter that connect people across cultures. This is more than a cooking class; it’s a cultural exchange where you’ll cook, eat, and connect with the heart of Aomori’s community. Menu may vary depending on the season and available ingredients.

The cooking class was wonderful. They taught us how to cook in a friendly way, and the food was delicious. We were able to learn about Japanese culture and food, and it broadened my perspective.

For the first time, take part in this type of event! The grandmothers were super gentle, like going back to "another home" in Japan. Everyone cooks, talks, eats together, and the whole person is healed. And there's an intimate vegetarian and halal counterpart that's really friendly to foreigners. If you want to really feel the temperature in Japanese homes, don't miss out on this experience. ❤️

I had a really great time there! I learned a lot about Japanese cuisine and had the chance to try it hands-on which made me really happy. I also enjoyed talking to Basama who was full of energy and was so cute! I do hope to return back in the future again.
