Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine

Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine is a hidden, mystical Shinto shrine located deep within the forests of Takamori in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Surrounded by ancient cedar trees, the shrine is nestled in a serene and otherworldly atmosphere. A long stone staircase, lined with moss-covered lanterns, leads visitors through the dense forest to the main shrine, creating an almost ethereal experience. The shrine is dedicated to various deities and is known for its secluded, peaceful environment, making it a popular spot for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature. Amanoiwato Shrine

Amanoiwato Shrine is a significant Shinto shrine located in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. It is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and is deeply connected to the ancient Japanese myth of her hiding in a cave, causing the world to be plunged into darkness. The shrine is divided into two parts: the main shrine and a hidden cave, believed to be the actual site where Amaterasu hid. The area is surrounded by lush greenery, with a serene atmosphere that draws both spiritual seekers and those interested in Japan's rich mythology. Visitors often participate in guided tours to catch a glimpse of the sacred cave, which is not accessible to the public on their own.

  • Truly experience Japan's country sights

The tour was an absolute highlight of my trip! Thomas was well organised, friendly, knowledgeable and was truly passionate about giving us the best tour. He gave us so many tips and went in depth with explaining the history of the sights. I'd highly recommend anyone visiting Fukuoka to venture further south into rural Japan and this tour is one of the best way to do it!

  • The journey takes longer than the sites

You spend 5 hours on a bus- getting there and returning. The sites are gorgeous but mobbed so you walk through in a line and leave. No time to linger or enjoy. The guide talked rubbish.

  • Long day, great scenic off the beaten path experience, prepare for walking!

The sightseeing stops on this all day tour were what we were hoping for and more. Winding into the thickly forested mountains and visiting Shinto shrines and the gorge combined natural beauty and traditional culture. Rain and mist made it atmospheric. Note that the two shrines visited are both IN the forest and have many many old stone steps - beautiful and a bit challenging. This was a very comfortable bus tour with nice touches like thoughtful extra stops for rest rooms/snacks, and some umbrellas for those without them. However we were not prepared that the actual tour operator, Gogoday Travel, is a Chinese company offering multiple tours, and most of the passengers were Chinese. The meeting spot was a mob scene and very disorganized. We almost missed our 8am bus - we should have planned to arrive 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Our bilingual tour guide Leena was charming, well-organized and kind and spoke English well, but her heavy accent made her narrated explanations extremely hard to understand.

  • Mao and this tour were incredible!!!

Mao was amazing!!! He was excellent at educating the group and managed the group, who all was able to have their own personal, independent journey while on the tour. We had people with all different types of physical ability and had no race in the group through the sea. Everything you wanted to see. I give him a 10/10! My only negative comment is that I wish the operator would’ve made it more clear that this tour did not include the boat ride. I thought I signed up for the boat, I did not get the boat.

Well planned and fun tour, our guide Mao was great! The last shrine was quite a bit of stairs so just an FYI but Takachiho Gorge was beautiful

  • Great tour company and destinations

Great tour guide with lots of interesting information, good coordination and nice list of destinations. The shrines are beautiful along with the gorge. We really liked the whole experience. Bus seats were a little hard and uncomfortable. I wish we could have did the top of mount aso instead. And I wish the tour ran from Kumamoto. Instead we went to Fukuoka a day early to hit the tour. But it all worked out.

While this was beautiful and the guide was very good the overview didn't mention that there were many steps and steep slopes. This is not a suitable trip for anyone with mobility issues and had I known how difficult it was I wouldn't have booked it.

While the places shine in their beauty, the road to get there does not. The guide was fairly unhelpful and barely provided his name. Albus or Elvis I’m not sure. The driver was very aggressive. I also worry that the bus had not been maintained or had gone without an inspection of the struts and shocks. I was being jostled and whipped around to the point of nausea Options for lunch are limited if you stay where they tell you to. Go out into the little town they’re our restaurants in the market with much better options. The guide would immediately get off the bus and start moving. If you were in the back of the bus, the man would be a quarter of a mile down the road before you got off. He would then bark command at you to “come here” like you’re a dog. Very rude and unprofessional. If you don’t mind spending the majority of time in the vehicle, this trip may be worth it. And perhaps things would be different if I didn’t have the same guide and driver. Landscape, the gorge the waterfall are all very beautiful. However, using this agency should make you think twice about who you allow to hold your life in their hands.

This was a full day trip to the Miyazaki gorge with two additional stops at a beautiful, mystical shrine, and a cave along the way. The sites were breathtaking, and our guide Sun was wonderful.
