What To Expect

1

Manastirea Voronet

Voronet Monastery was built in 1488 in record time: three months, three weeks and three days, today being part of the UNESCO heritage. The exterior murals have preserved their hues despite centuries of inclement weather, but the ingredients used in preparing the paints are still a mystery. The scenes in the murals depict, like a movie, the history of Christianity, presented in an original manner, very much influenced by folk beliefs, by the Eastern culture, but also by the Orthodox thought.

Moldovita Monastery

Moldovita Monastery, included in the UNESCO heritage in 1993, was built between 1532 and 1537. For hundreds of years, the murals were the only way uneducated country dwellers could learn about the teachings of the Bible. The frescoes are an immense color illustration of Biblical scenes, adapted to the history of the place and to the important moments in the life of the community.

  • An unforgettable experience thanks to an exceptional guide!

We had the chance to make an expedition with a guide to the beautiful monasteries around Iași, and I can only recommend this experience 100%! The places themselves are superb, steeped in history, spirituality and striking architectural beauty. But what really made this tour exceptional was our guide. He was not only extremely competent, with an impressive knowledge of local history, art and traditions, but also incredibly kind, caring and passionate. His precise and anecdotal explanations brought real added value to the visit. Thanks to him, every monastery came alive before our eyes: it was not only a series of beautiful buildings, but a deep cultural and historical immersion. I highly recommend this expedition to anyone passing through Iași or the area. It is a unique and enriching way to discover the treasures of Romania, accompanied by a professional and warm guide. Many thanks for this memorable experience!

One of the main reasons we went to Iasi, was to do the Rolandia tour company's Moldova tour, but since we were in this area, we signed up for this tour as well. Leo (Leonard) was our guide, and again he was fantastic. This trip was a lot of driving, but it was really interesting seeing the Romanian countryside and small villages as we whizzed by. Seeing the Stork nests on the street posts throughout the drive was also a pleasant surprise. The three monasteries that we visited were well worth the trip. My favorite was the first stop, but they were all interesting. Leo told us a lot about each of them and made sure we understood as much as possible about each of the monasteries and their artwork. We also stopped at a high point with a neat wooden swing overlooking the countryside, and for lunch in a nice restaurant. We did this trip the day after the Moldova trip- again, two long days, but a very perfect way to see this part of the world.

This was one of the best guided tours of my life. I highly recommend it. First surprise, a solo tour. The guide Iulian is fabulous, very knowledgeable about his subject and about Romania in general. We spent the whole time talking, there was no dull moment. His approach of the monasteries, emphasizing the dominant colour of each of the three monasteries we visited is very interesting. In his free time Iulian researches aspects of the paintings that he konws less about, he is so passionate and he transmits his enthusiasm during the excursion. Another plus, he is a very cautious driver. And his English is very refined.

Iulian gave us an absolutely perfect experience of the monasteries. He is extremely knowledgeable and devoted to learning, reflected in the care with which he shared details around everything from history and art through modern-day times. We used everything we learned as vital context to the rest of our Romanian travels. He was friendly and attentive to our travel needs and questions. I would have loved to book with him for more tours, and certainly will in the future.

We had a wonderful day and a great experience seeing the unique painted monasteries. George was our guide, and we couldn't have dreamed of a better person to show and tell us all of the important and interesting information regarding not only the monasteries, but also Bucovina and Romania as a whole. George was very professional, passionate and able to explain the details about the paintings in a very clear. He made us feel very comfortable, checked frequently on our needs, drove well and responsibly- a great guide and a great guy. It was the best day of our stay at Romania, and we will surely remember it for the beautiful landscapes of Bucovina and mystic atmosphere of the monasteries.

The main reason for my recent trip to Romania was to view the religious srt in the Orthodox and Byzantine churches and monasteries in Bucharest and in Bucovina, located in northeastern Romania. The highlight of my trip to Romania was the visit to the UNESCO Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. These incredible Byzantine monasteries are worthy of a trip to Romania. I was very fortunate to have Mihai as my private driver and guide. Mihai is very pleasant and a very responsible driver, and a great conversationalist. I learned a lot about the fascinating history of Moldavia from Mihai. We visited the 3 most important and best preserved painted monasteries of Bucovina: Voronet, Moldovita and Sucevita, and we spent about 1 hour in each. Each one of these monasteries is a treasure. Mihai explained to me in detail the meaning of each fresco painted outside and inside each monastery. To summarize, this was an unforgettable day in my life, and I highly recommend doing this private day trip to every visitor coming to Romania.
