Debre Libanos Orthodox Church
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Explore Debre Libanos Monastery Monastery Complex: Visit the Debre Libanos Monastery, a significant monastic center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. The current church was built in 1961 under Emperor Haile Selassie. Museum: Explore the monastery's museum, which houses ancient religious artifacts, manuscripts, crosses, and ceremonial clothes. Saint Tekle Haymanot's Cave: Take a short walk (around 15 minutes, uphill) to the sacred cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot is said to have meditated for 29 years, famously standing on one leg for seven of those years. Pilgrims often visit to receive holy water. Wildlife: Keep an eye out for Gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia, which are often found in the surrounding areas. You might also spot various bird species.

5.00I had a wonderful experience visiting Debre Libanos Monastery, one of the most spiritual and historic places in Ethiopia. The setting is breathtaking, with the church surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes and the famous Portuguese Bridge nearby. Inside, the monastery holds deep religious significance, and the atmosphere is very peaceful. Our guide explained the rich history of the site, which made the visit even more meaningful. We also enjoyed the scenic views of the gorge and the chance to meet some of the monks. It is a perfect day trip from Addis Ababa if you want to combine culture, history, and nature. I highly recommend visiting Debre Libanos for anyone looking to experience the spiritual and natural beauty of Ethiopia.
