Târgoviște served as a Saxon colony throughout the 13th century, but due to its economic growth, it became a secondary residence for Wallachian princes during the 14th century. The Royal court was moved from Curtea de Argeș to Târgoviște in 1431, and it was constantly refurbished throughout the years. In 1395 the city was sieged and set on fire by Bayezid I, and in 1462 the Ottoman invasion was only stopped from reaching the city by Vlad the Impaler’s Night Attack. One hypothesis claims that the Densuș Church was initially a pagan temple, and some of the clues include the fact that the altar is closer to the South than to the East, the roof that is shaped like a dove, and the lion statues who are united by their tails. Another hypothesis claims that the church was built as a mausoleum to the Roman general Longinus Maximus.

It was an amazing experience. Adalina accommodated all of our very personal requests and changes in stride. She communicated frequently, to ensure we were comfortable from the first email to the last. All admission fees were handled for us, so we were never in lines or without a ticket. Our guide, Emile, was fantastic. His knowledge was impeccable and very personalized. He regaled is with stories of ancient and medieval history on long trips and his insight into the communist paid off Romania was enlightening as well. After seven days it felt like we were family when we parted. Do not hesitate to book with Rolandia. Trust that they will provide you with a one in a lifetime experience in Romania.

  • “Dracula Beyond the Legend” Tour Highly Recommended

We cannot speak highly enough about how great our Rolandia “Dracula Beyond the Legend” tour was with our guide Marcel in July/August 2023. Marcel spoke incredible English and was immensely knowledgeable about Romanian history, culture, religion, traditions and its flora, fauna, wildlife and geography. He was also an excellent driver and knew exactly how to make the most of every sight and location. We cannot believe how much we saw and experienced; Marcel was dedicated, excited to show off his country’s impressive culture and landscapes, and absolutely indefatigable in terms of energy. We had an absolutely wonderful time and we highly recommend Rolandia’s tours to anyone and everyone. We felt most privileged to see Romania through Marcel’s eyes and cannot imagine any better way to experience this beautiful and richly cultured country. In addition to all the spectacular sights (Bran Castle, Peles Castle, and Sibiu were among our all-time favs, but honestly there are too many highlights to name), we also got to see brown bears up close in Transylvania! Highly recommended!

  • An Eye-Opening Wonder

We had a wonderful adventure on this tour, with our excellent and friendly guide, Laurentiu. We never saw so many sunflowers in our lives and the Carpathians were breathtaking. As we wondered, our knowledgeable guide brought the history of the region to life, helping us picture what life was and in many cases, still is like there. We particularly loved Sighisoara and Sibiu -- they are living, breathing medieval towns -- vibrant and fascinating. From the ruins of Vlad's court in Targoviste, to the amazing Black Church in Brasov, to Corvin Castle, Romania was an eye-opening wonder for us. In addition, the people that we interacted with were open and kind, with a good grasp of English, and we enjoyed the European ease of dining whenever you want, and everything was fresh. It was a fabulous trip!

We have just completed a really enjoyable and interesting 8 day trip through Transylvania which was enhanced by our guide, Gelu, whose knowledge, enthusiasm and experience were superb. All the arrangements made by Rolandia worked exactly as expected. We substituted a visit to Peles Castle rather than Snagov Monastery as the former is of more interest and lay on our route. The accommodation throughout (4* hotels) was better than we had expected. All in all, apart from the Bucharest traffic, it was a most enjoyable trip.

We had a wonderful time, and Romanians are the nicest people we have met. The sights and hotels were beyond our expectations. On the day we were scheduled to drive the transfagarasan highway it was raining and very foggy. Florin suggested we get a cup of coffee and wait for 5-10 min. The fog cleared and we had bright sunshine!!! I got to see the highway . I highly recommend this tour and would definitely recommend Florin as your guide.

This was a great tour! The tour company was great to work with and our guide, Florin, was awesome! Aside from the history lessons Florin provided, he took great care of us. Always made sure we got checked into our hotels without incident. The castles, monasteries and citadels we visited were amazing. Sibiu was a favorite ... a charming Old Town. Romania is a beautiful country full of history, beauty, great food and wonderful people. I would definitely recommend!!
