Hainaut is a province where history rises around you in stone, steel, and water. On this audio driving tour, you’ll trace the region’s transformation from medieval battleground, to aristocratic showcase, to industrial powerhouse. Along the way, you’ll discover how castles, coal mines, and canals shaped one of Belgium’s most layered landscapes. The tour starts at Château de Seneffe, an estate built in the 1700s by a wealthy merchant who turned military contracts into architectural ambition. You’ll make your way to the elegant Château d’Attre, an inhabited 18th-century residence where original furniture, family portraits, and leather-bound books remain exactly where their owners left them. From there, you’ll visit the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Château d’Havré, rescued from oblivion by local volunteers. The tour ends at the Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift, a 100-metre concrete tower that raises fully loaded barges 73 metres between canal levels.
