Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark
The undulating strips of multi-coloured sand that settle in different layers are one of the most photographed and visited sights on the island. They sit in an open clearing whose lower edge is skirted by an endemic plant garden highlighting the natural heritage of Mauritius. Open all year round the Geopark is a must-see attraction for curious minds of all ages. Among other things, there is also a fun Tortoise Park and a Souvenir Shop offering an array of memorabilia, including local products from Chamarel while the Coffee shop is a happy café experience.

People, it looks like a lot of land!!! Save your money, it's not worth anything. There are other very cool tours that are worth the investment

A walk between hills with amazing colours that an Earth can offer. In addition you can watch turtles and baby turtles. In a bar not only refreshing drinks, but also a fresh juice of sugar cane is made that natural taste we enjoyed.

Disappointing... Expensive ticket for not much! A waterfall, okay, but we've seen some before for free in the route: Alexandra's Fall and Black River Gorge Park. So why pay for this one? The turn around the basin in 7 colors is nice but not worth this price.

Different experience. I would say to purchase your tickets early; the admission fee is fair for what you are seeing. Also, the crowd size is fairly busy when it is not raining. The staff were wonderful, especially in the store at the end, purchasing souvenirs. The atmosphere is cool, and we stayed for a few hours, with regard to the length of the visit. I would say for me, the best was the coffee and ice cream store, which was pretty good. The Atmosphere was relaxing, but also be mindful of the little ones walking around as well. I would go back for the coffee and ice cream :-).

The Geopark includes several attractions and the main ones are only Chamarel Falls and the lands of 7 colors. The access road to the park starts from the B104 and is not very visible, because it is right in a curve. But there are a few signs and then Google Map “knows” it and so it is hard to miss it. The ticket office is right at the beginning. Here you can choose from different combinations of attractions, by consulting the explanatory signs or asking the staff directly. After passing the ticket office, first meet the Chamarel Waterfall parking lot and continuing, arrive at the bottom of the Terre dei 7 colori parking lot. From here continue for a short walk and arrive at the colorful hills, which are among the most publicized attractions of Mauritius. You can only walk around it following a wooden walkway and, next to it, you can also see a fence with giant turtles. For me the place was a bit disappointing, because the colors are not so obvious. The situation improved a bit when the sun came out, but I remain convinced that many of the photos found on the internet are obtained with filters. There is also a bar and a small gift shop on site. It is a geological formation “discovered” by a member of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Mauritius in 1879. The dunes include sands colored with seven different colors (red, brown, purple, green, blue, purple and yellow). The sands were formed about 600 million years ago by the decomposition of a volcanic rock gully (basalt) in clay. The content of the sands is responsible for the different colors; in particular, the two main chemical elements present in the soil, iron and aluminum, are responsible for the colors red/anthracite and blue/violet. It is believed that the different color layers are a consequence of the cooling of molten volcanic rocks at different external temperatures (leading to different percentages of elements mixed with sand), but the causes of their evident spontaneous separation have not yet been definitively elucidated. Rating 4 refers to the Geopark as a whole, while the Lands of 7 colors would give a 3, in the average.

Maybe the earth used to be 7 colours sometime ago but in March 2025, it was 3 faded colours! We waited in line for 15 minutes to make the payment. People in their cars who don’t feel like waiting come out of their cars to the ticket booth. Then the competition to pay for the ticket begins. There is no line. The people who want to pay from their cars are competing with the people who have come out of the cars. Motorcycles whiz by the parked cars and go ahead of them to the ticket booth. There is no brochure for the site. There are no tour guides (I saw that on the website and should have interpreted that sign and stayed away!) There is not enough parking so the taxi and bus drivers have to play Musical Parking Spots. The taxi drivers have to move so the parking spot as new buses and cars arrive. The parking spot where you left the taxi will NOT be his parking spot when you return. You’ll have to scour the 100 buses and cars in parking lot until you find your taxi driver. There is a resident stray cat at the restaurant. Don’t even think of trying to finish your meal in peace! Who needs a stray cat at a restaurant? Don’t waste your time to get to 7 Colors of Earth! Don’t waste your $600 rupees for adults! 7 Colored Earth overpromises and underdelivers!

Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark is a fascinating place that highlights the incredible diversity of our planet. It’s amazing to see how the earth can create such unique and vibrant colors naturally. The park itself is well-maintained, with excellent facilities that make your visit comfortable. There are also adorable tortoises on the grounds, adding a cute touch to the experience. It’s a great spot to learn about the natural wonders of Mauritius and appreciate the beauty of our planet’s diversity.
