Mandu is an ancient city going back to the 6th century. It came into prominence due to its strategic location and was the capital of the Malwa Kingdom for a period in history. The city is most well known for the romance between an Afghan King Baz Bahadur and a Hindu singer Roopmati which also changed the course of history of the Malwa region as well as that of the Delhi Sultanate.

Baz Bahadur's Palace
The Palace was built in 1509 by the last Afghan sultan of Malwa, Baz Bahadur. The 2 storied Palace has magnificent arches at the entrance. During its hey days an aqueduct used to run through the arches into the Palace courtyard. The terrace is adorned with elevated dome pavilions.
Roopmati Pavilion
It is magnificent expression of Afghan architecture in sandstone. The Palace overlooks the Nimar Valley and looks majestic while perched on the edge of a precipice . The original intent of this structure was to act as an observation post for the royal army. After the couple fell in love, it was transformed with extensions to enable Roopmati to worship the river Narmada for the well being of her love.
