This is the part of the experience most visitors never reach.
Many tours stop at the monastery. We take you further—into the forest, to the cave where Saint Ivan Rilski lived in solitude. It’s not just an extra stop; it’s the moment that gives meaning to everything you’ve seen before.
Without the cave, you’ve seen a remarkable building.
With it, you begin to understand the spirit of the place—and why it matters.
Included as a standard part of the journey, this experience transforms a simple visit into something deeper, more personal, and truly unforgettable.

Rila Monastery
Bulgaria's most visited landmark is not just a monastery. It is a fortress of faith that kept an entire nation alive. Founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan Rilski, the Rila Monastery sits at 1,147m where two rivers meet beneath dramatic vertical cliffs deep in Bulgaria's highest mountain range. For five centuries of Ottoman rule, these walls protected the Bulgarian language, traditions, and identity when the outside world tried to erase them. UNESCO Site since 1979. Walk through the magnificent arcaded courtyard and stand before the vivid frescoes painted by the masters of Samokov painting school — some of the finest examples of Orthodox art anywhere in the world. Your guide brings every detail to life: the stories behind the paintings, the legends of the monks, the turbulent history buried in every stone. Maximum 8 people. No crowds, no rushing. A genuine small-group experience that gives you time to feel the weight of a thousand years of history — not just photograph it.
Cave of St.Ivan Rilski
Most tours stop at the monastery gates. We take you to where the story actually started. A short walk through ancient forest above the monastery leads to the cave where Saint Ivan Rilski — shepherd, hermit, and Bulgaria's most beloved saint — spent years alone in prayer in the 10th century. His solitude inspired his followers to build the monastery in his name. Without this cave, there is no monastery. Without this man, there is no story. Inside, pilgrims have performed the same ritual for a thousand years. You write your deepest wish on a piece of paper and press it into the cave wall. Local legend says the cave's passage tests the purity of your soul — those who pass through carry something back with them. Whether you believe it or not, you will feel it. This is the part of the day that most tour groups never experience. Fixed price 79€ per person, any group size up to 8. Book early — departures on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
